Job Summary
The Consultant Manager will lead and deliver land management and conservation projects across Yorkshire, acting as the primary supervisory point for contractors and casual conservation assistants. The position reports to the Board and the CEO of the Trust and works from the Trust’s operational base as well as on various project sites.
Responsibilities
* Plan, coordinate and deliver practical habitat management tasks, including land and pond management, tree planting, fencing, soft landscaping and other conservation activities.
* Lead and supervise up to five casual conservation assistants and contractors, ensuring safe working practices and high‑quality outcomes.
* Manage small budgets (up to £1,000) and maintain accurate reporting on project progress.
* Provide on‑site supervision, training and performance feedback to team members.
* Act as the fore‑person in the absence of the WildScapes Manager and represent the Trust on project sites.
* Maintain operational base functions – equipment upkeep, materials stock, vehicle safety checks.
* Produce routine reports for the Management Team and liaise with landowners, local authorities and Natural England as required.
* Present a professional image of WildScapes and the Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust at all times.
* Support the Trust’s charitable objectives and policies and undertake any additional duties as directed by management.
Qualifications
* 1–2 years of experience in a supervisory role within conservation or a related field.
* Practical experience of post‑rail and post‑and‑wire fencing, tree/hedge planting, coppicing, scrub clearance, tree felling, footpath maintenance, pond clearance/creation, invasive species control, drystone walling, hedge laying, and countryside furniture construction.
* Experience selecting and managing casual staff or contractors.
* Experience delivering commercial land‑management contracts (desirable).
* Experience working with volunteers and providing education programmes.
* UK Level 4 qualification or equivalent HNC diploma.
* Full driving licence.
* First Aid certificate or willingness to undertake training.
* Strong health & safety knowledge and adherence to workplace procedures.
* Excellent communication, interpersonal, organisational and IT skills (Google Workspace, Microsoft Office).
* Ability to manage budgets up to £1,000, meet deadlines and work both independently and as part of a small team.
* Commitment to biodiversity and conservation, professionalism, and strong work ethic.
* Physically fit – able to walk across uneven terrain, carry equipment and be on feet for extended periods.

* Salary of £27,846 per annum (PO1 Grade). Pay award pending.
* Automatic enrolment into the SRWT pension scheme for staff earning over £192 per week.
* Pension contributions: 3 % by SRWT, 5 % by employee after 6 months of service; 9 % after successful probation (subject to statutory matching).
* Hybrid working arrangement: office based in Stafford Road with occasional travel across Sheffield and Rotherham.
* Working hours: 37.5 hours per week, excluding lunch; occasional evening or weekend work with time off in lieu.
* Annual leave: 28 days from day one (3 days to be taken between Christmas and New Year), plus additional days after service milestones.
* Health & safety supervision, safeguarding induction and background checks. All staff complete mandatory safeguarding training.
