The Radiation Therapist must ensure quality patient care and maintain the highest level of patient and personnel safety.
Job Description
The Technologist should inform the patient that s/he will be responsible for administering ionizing radiation therapy according to prescription and instruction of the radiation oncologist. Check that informed consent has been completed. Check patient identification verbally as well as picture form. Check calculations prior to treatment including IMPAC. Accurate positioning and patient comfort. Therapist should maintain visual and verbal contact with the patient. Therapist is responsible for delivering treatment in accordance with center’s protocols. Accurately delivers the prescribed course of radiation therapy with minimal supervision after checking patient chart for daily dose, prescription, diagnosis and consent. Prepares treatment room for each patient as prescribed; transfer patient safely to treatment couch. Maintains skin marking as necessary. Knowledgeable in the tattoo techniques. Observes patient for unusual reactions and events and reports occurrence to Radiation Oncologist or Nurse: assist in emergency treatment as needed. Monitors radiation safety measures for patients and personnel. Assist in daily quality assurance checks on treatment equipment: immediately reports erratic machine operation to Chief Therapist. Assist in tumor localization and the preparation of immobilization devices: assists in dosimetry procedures. May assist physics in block making and calibration. Knowledgeable in use of multi-leaf collimator. Maintains orderliness and efficiency of work area. Maintains department records correctly: records daily treatment chart accurately as prescribed. Performs patient quality assurance routinely. Keeps treatment and simulation rooms supplied with inventory as needed. Presents him/herself in a professional manner and dress at all times in the work place. Assist in orientation of new employees. Provides technical direction, guidance and explanation to others.
Qualifications
* Education: Required: Must be a graduate of an accredited Radiation Therapy Program
* Experience: Preferred: Six months Radiation Oncology Therapy experience or equivalent clinical experience obtained through completion of a Radiation Therapy Program
* Other Skills/Knowledge: Required: Trained in equipment maintenance; General understanding of Physics, Anatomy and Physiology; Excellent communication skills
* Licenses/Registrations/Certifications: Required: Registry eligible for ARRT; Must obtain ARRT certification within 12 months of hire; Must be at a minimum Temporarily Licensed by the MA Department of Public Health and obtain a permanent License within 12 months of hire
