In 1901, Henry Ford designed and built the race car called “Sweepstakes.” On October 10th of that year, he drove Sweepstakes against Alexander Winton, a famous racer and builder. Against all odds Ford won. That was the beginning - “the race that changed the world” -and it continues to this day. From our victories at Le Mans in 1966 and exactly fifty years later in 2016, to multiple World Championships, the spirit of Henry Ford lives with us every day through our motorsport efforts around the world.
About the Role
The No 1 Technician is a senior technical role at the heart of the car build and trackside operation. Sitting directly below the Chief Mechanic, this role is responsible for the hands‑on execution of all mechanical work on the assigned car and for overseeing the activities of the No 2 Technicians working alongside them.
Our ideal candidate will have a proven track record of success within a top‑tier motorsport team and the ability to deliver tirelessly under pressure, with professionalism and a can‑do, positive attitude. This role suits a highly experienced motorsport technician who combines deep mechanical expertise with strong organisational skills and the ability to lead small groups in high‑pressure environments.
Key Responsibilities
Car Build, Preparation & Reliability:
* Take full responsibility for the build, preparation, and mechanical condition of the assigned car, ensuring it meets the highest standards for every session.
* Oversee and execute all major mechanical tasks, including assemblies, installations, and setup changes, ensuring precision, compliance, and consistency.
* Review and follow all engineering build specifications, reporting any discrepancies or concerns to the Chief Mechanic.
* Conduct detailed mechanical checks, ensuring issues are identified early and resolved efficiently.
* Manage the car’s parts usage, signoff processes, and configuration accuracy.
Leadership & Coordination:
* Act as the primary point of contact for the Chief Mechanic, for the assigned car.
* Lead and direct the No 2 Technicians allocated to the car, ensuring they understand priorities, standards, and task sequencing.
* Delegate work appropriately to support efficient workflow and skills development within the mechanical team.
* Provide clear task briefs and quality checks to ensure all work meets team expectations.
* Support training of junior mechanics and technicians, reinforcing correct processes and high professional standards.
Trackside Operations:
* Execute all mechanical activities on the assigned car during race weekends, ensuring readiness for each session and rapid turnaround between events.
* Lead the mechanical execution of setup changes, damage repairs, and pit stop preparation.
* Work closely with the Race Engineer and Chief Mechanic to ensure all engineering instructions are executed precisely.
* Participate in pit stops as allocated, performing tasks with consistency, speed, and safety.
* Respond to unexpected issues with calm, decisive action and clear communication.
Post-Event, Reporting & Continuous Improvement:
* Provide detailed mechanical feedback to the Chief Mechanic regarding reliability, wear trends, and improvement opportunities.
* Support the documentation of learnings, damage reports, and post-event strip‑downs.
* Assist in the continuous refinement of mechanical procedures and workshop processes.
Health, Safety & Compliance:
* Ensure all work meets the team’s safety standards and follows internal procedures and FIA regulations.
* Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment in the garage and workshop.
* Actively contribute to a professional, respectful, and high‑performance team culture.
Qualifications, Skills & Personal Attributes
