Midlothian Council has secured funding from the LTA to redevelop tennis courts at three park sites: King's Park in Dalkeith, Abbeylands in Newtongrange and Beeslack in Penicuik. As part of the investment, Midlothian Council are committed to delivering free community tennis sessions as part of the LTA's Barclays Free Park Tennis initiative, as well as further tennis development activity.
As a result, Midlothian Council are now seeking expressions of interest from qualified tennis coaches to help with the provision of that programme of activities. In return for delivering Barclays Free Park Tennis sessions and other community sessions as agreed, the coach(es) engaged will be guaranteed a weekly number of court hours, at a discounted court rate, to be able to operate their own coaching business from the sites.
Additional development activity may include Active Schools sessions, holiday programmes and other community outreach work, and the exact configuration of programming will be negotiated based on the availability of the coach(es) and the requirements of local communities.
To note your interest, or to discuss the opportunities further, please contact Kate Murray, Development Manager Sport & Leisure, Midlothian Council on 07795 223 842 or by email: Kate.Murray@midlothian.gov.uk
Work is nearing completion at all three sites. All six courts have been extensively resurfaced, with further improvements to key infrastructure, including the installation of code-access gates (used in conjunction with the LTAs ClubSpark booking system). The launch date for each site is still be confirmed, but the aim is to open these soon after the refurbishment works are all complete.
By investing in court refurbishment, rather than letting them fall into further disrepair, and developing a varied tennis programme across Midlothian, we aim to encourage more of our residents to be active, improve their health and wellbeing, and foster wider community engagement.
Midlothian Tennis Development Vision:
In line with the goals of the Midlothian Single Plan, which seeks to create healthier and safer communities, while promoting increased physical activity and improved mental health, we believe that upgraded courts will bring a number of direct and indirect benefits, some of which include:
* Increased Opportunities for Physical Activity: High-quality, accessible facilities for recreational play will contribute to more opportunities for local residents to engage in tennis and other forms of racket sports.
* Improved Mental and Physical Wellbeing: Playing tennis offers numerous health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health and mobility, stress relief, and increased social interaction.
* Diversity of Sports: Providing tennis adds variety to the recreational options available to the public, and more choice of activity can help more people to be active.
* Long-Term Sustainability: The investment in high-quality courts, with provisions for ongoing maintenance, ensures that tennis in Midlothian can be sustainable for years to come, with long-term benefits both for the general public and for local clubs & their members.
* Safer Communities: Increased use of public parks can help reduce anti-social behaviour, which in turn can make users feel safer and make confident to access the space.
