As a technician, you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

About the role (External)
Our technicians work outside in all conditions, at all times of the year, day or night. You could be involved in demanding manual work, often transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Being safety-focused, respectful of rules, and a team player is critical, as you’ll often work near moving trains traveling at high speed.

You’ll use your skills to deliver work safely and ensure the team has the right competencies to meet strict safety standards. You’ll also be a role model for safe working behaviors and confident to challenge potential safety risks, ensuring everyone gets home safe every day.

Our technicians play a vital role in maintenance teams. You don’t necessarily need rail experience but must demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following:
* Leadership – Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team for safe and efficient work.
* Effective communicator – Strong communication skills to deliver clear instructions.
* Technical skills – Knowledge and experience in inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to the discipline applied for.
* Safety – Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems of work, and challenge unsafe situations.
* Problem solver – Persistent in finding safe, effective solutions and developing relevant skills and competencies.
* Willingness to learn – Committed to ongoing skill development and staying updated with standards and procedures.
* Relevant qualification – Ideally hold an NVQ Level 1 or 2 related to the discipline or equivalent experience.

Here’s some additional information:
* Shifts – Involve a rotating pattern including days, nights, and weekends.
* Outdoor working – Comfortable working in various weather conditions.
* Safe working – Employment is subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical assessments, and BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight tests.
* Driving – Must have a category B driving license to operate Network Rail vehicles.
* Commute times – Within a 60-minute commute of the location.
Candidates require telecoms experience in fibre & copper cable jointing and must be willing to be on call one week in four.
