Job overview

The band 5 Alcohol Lead Nurse will be an integral member of the Alcohol Care Team which provides care and treatment for patients with alcohol misuse issues. They will advise Trust staff on the care and management of acute alcohol withdrawal, deliver training to staff on the management of alcohol dependency and addiction and will be responsible for holding a caseload of individual patients who are not engaging in the community but continue to come to hospital and patients who are pre or post detox.

Main duties of the job

1. To comprehensively assess patients, gaining information about their physical health, mental health, social issues as well as their alcohol history to format a plan of care based on the patients individual needs.
2. To advise clinical staff on the management of patients experiencing acute alcohol withdrawal, including detoxification medication and vitamin prescribing.
3. To advise and support emergency department staff on the admission criteria for patients with alcohol misuse issues attending the department.
4. To liaise with and build strong professional relationships with other healthcare professionals both within the hospital and external agencies to meet the needs of the patient.
5. To provide training to Trust staff on screening and brief interventions, and to participate in the development and delivery of education programmes.
6. To act as team leader in the absence of senior staff.

7. RN/RMN or equivalent professional registration
8. Evidence of relevant post registration training and development
9. BSC Honours Nursing

Experience

11. Post registration experience in working with people with alcohol dependence
12. Knowledge base in the provision of substance misuse and preferred treatment methods with a recovery focused agenda
13. Experience of effective collaborative working
14. Experience in alcohol misuse service delivery within hospital and/or primary care settings
15. Evidence of Interdisciplinary / multi-agency working experience
