Job Overview
Manage research and development of firmware for new laser systems, oversee firmware development plans, thoroughly test firmware, and build effective processes and policies at a global level.
Primary Responsibilities
* Drive leading‑edge firmware solutions and participate in creating function concepts and the firmware roadmap.
* Ensure product innovation maintains design, quality and cost‑effective principles.
* Maintain build systems and develop algorithms for measurement data processing.
* Test, debug new and existing code and create interface code.
* Implement protocols for network and industrial communication.
* Plan priorities, track deliverables, and create regular reports to the head of the function.
* Manage projects from initiation to handover and conduct code reviews.
* Act as a key subject‑matter expert advisor and work with other disciplines to create global best‑practice procedures.
* Ensure documentation captures tests, code, policies, procedures and work breakdown.
* Liaise with other sites and departments to ensure effective processes across the globe.
* Continuously improve team processes and the function.
Key Interactions
Stakeholders include Engineering, R&D, Product Management and Project Management; limited external stakeholders.
Leadership Expectations
* Manage the Strategic Plan and implement organisational goals and KPIs at the department level.
* Set leadership goals, scope people priorities and initiatives, and report on progress.
* Advise on policy, monitor policy, and identify/address gaps.
* Accountable for people plans, KPIs and budgets.
Qualifications Required
Relevant Computer or Electrical Engineering degree.
Skills & Knowledge Required
* Strong C/C++ skills and practical firmware development on embedded systems.
* Knowledge of communication protocols, automated testing, continuous integration and scripting languages.
* Experience collaborating with engineering and project teams to achieve solutions.
* Ability to design innovative, cost‑effective products for customers.
* Time management, organisational skills and the ability to work concurrently on multiple projects.
* Excellent communication with engineering teams and other stakeholders.
Experience Required
* More than 10 years of experience in firmware development on embedded systems.
* Demonstrable experience setting up and leading a firmware function.
* Experience creating engineering plans, system design and documenting design instructions.
* Experience in the photonics industry and in a busy growing work environment.
* Team management experience and hands‑on leadership.
* Experience managing change and creating cost‑effective solutions.
Travel Expectations
Up to 10 % annually, potentially globally.

Business English.
