At Severn Trent, we are undertaking a £415m project to replace 870 miles of old water pipes across the Midlands. This historic investment aims to improve water quality, reduce leaks, and enhance reliability of supply for millions of people. The new pipes are designed to last up to 100 years.

We are looking for a Network Construction Operative to join a team and deliver Mains Renewal construction activity for a specific site within one of four regions (North, South, East, West).

As the Network Construction Operative, your key role will be to ensure we provide good wholesome water with minimal disruption to our customers. You will undertake significant, large-scale construction activity on-site in a single location, involving excavation, installation, testing and commissioning of new mains and assets. You will be responsible for the safe and efficient delivery of mains renewal, working as part of a team of six focused on water mains activity. This role requires a 42-hour work week, Monday to Friday, starting at 7:00 AM and ending at 4:30 PM, with a half-hour early finish at 4:00 PM on Fridays.
Key accountability
* Identify and mitigate potential hazards and document findings in a daily dynamic risk assessment.
* Undertake safe location and avoidance of underground works, and safe and timely removal and disposal of asbestos.
* Liaise with customers, provide support as required, and provide updates throughout each DMA renewal while maintaining customer supply with sufficient riders/overlanders as per the design.
* Implement trenchless solutions where possible to mitigate cost and disruption to the infrastructure.
* Standby is required.
What You’ll Bring To The Role
For this role the right candidate will have a strong focus on safety. We are looking for candidates who can conduct risk assessments, ensure safe excavation practices, and handle hazardous materials such as asbestos. Compliance with regulations and maintaining on-site safety standards are key responsibilities.
The role requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Candidates should be able to liaise with customers, provide updates, and work collaboratively with team members to ensure smooth project execution. Adaptability and the ability to work under pressure are important.
Candidates should be able to make prompt decisions, handle a variety of tasks, and be flexible with shift timings to meet business requirements. Problem-solving skills to mitigate risks and ensure project success are also important.
