Consultant in Elderly Medicine
Applications are invited for a substantive post for the position of Consultant in Elderly Medicine at Countess of Chester Hospital.
Working full time: 10 sessions per week.
The Elderly Medicine department has expanded rapidly over the past 7 years, and this additional post will bring the number of geriatricians within the department to thirteen. The department offers a comprehensive portfolio of specialist elderly care services and encourages an inclusive, flexible approach to service development. The post provides opportunities to influence rapid developments within an energetic, dynamic department and support acute frailty services directly or through other subspecialty support.
The Trust is an RCP Future Hospital exemplar site that transforms urgent care pathways, working closely with community health and social care providers to deliver an integrated model that increases the utilisation of ambulatory and short‑stay care while supporting enhanced community care delivery. The post holder will have a significant educational role within the strong Medical Education department.
Responsibilities
* Regular ward rounds on inpatient frailty ward, supporting junior doctors and the multidisciplinary team. Attend daily MDTs. Named consultant for 14 inpatients plus outliers (indicative figures 0 to 4 patients), i.e. 300–350 patient reviews per month.
* General elderly clinic and a subspecialty clinic (flexible to candidate interest – movement disorders, falls, stroke, community). Indicative clinic numbers are 8 new and 32 reviews per month for a weekly 3‑hour clinic.
* Front‑door acute geriatrician sessions: support the emergency department, rapid response team and acute physicians with specialty in‑reach, providing early advice and input into care and management plans of frail elderly in the acute setting.
* Supervision of junior doctors.
* Attendance to and input into specialty and departmental meetings.
