Electronics Engineer Wanted: Creative mind, eager to build, ideas in motion

We’re not just looking for someone who can follow a schematic, we want someone who gets excited by hands-on electronics, creative challenges and solving problems no one’s solved before.

We’re aivaf, the UKs Leading Design & Fabrication Specialists in Interactives, Props and Model Making for Exhibitions. We create bespoke tech-heavy, experience-driven installations that merge hardware, interactivity, creativity and good old-fashioned problem solving.

Now we’re looking for an Electronics Engineer who can bring hands-on skill and a sharp mind to our growing team, ideally with a solid background in microcontroller software development in C or a similar high-level language.

•Projects that go into museums, science centres, visitor attractions and creative tech spaces

•Small team, huge variety of work

•Space to shape how things are built, not just follow instructions

•Company pension scheme

•Private medical insurance

️ The Role

This is practical engineering for creative spaces that is hands-on, problem-solving and always evolving. You will be:

•Designing and laying out PCBs for real-world interactive systems

•Performing fast, precise and tidy SMD and THT soldering.

•Writing and tweaking code for microcontrollers (Arduino-level stuff and beyond)

•Digging into faults when things don’t work, because they won’t always work first time

•Building and testing electronic assemblies that end up in museums, theme parks, attractions and tech-driven spaces

•Documenting your work clearly and consistently so others can understand, support or build on it

•Occasionally working off-site (in the UK or overseas), seeing your work come to life in real spaces

We’re project-based, fast-moving and hands-on. Every day’s different. You’ll be trusted with real responsibility and supported to do your best work.

What You’ll Need

•Understanding of microcontrollers (Arduino or similar)

•General coding knowledge for embedded systems (C, C++, etc.)

•Confidence using test equipment like multimeters, oscilloscopes and logic analysers

•Ability to read and adapt code written by others

•A clear, methodical approach to problem-solving and fault finding

•Strong planning and organisational skills with the ability to manage your time and prioritise tasks.

•Good timekeeping and awareness of deadlines and project budgets

•Ability to work well in a team and build strong, professional working relationships

•Clear written and verbal communication skills

•PCB design experience (Altium, KiCAD, EasyEDA, we’re flexible on background tools but we use EasyPC in-house)

•Confident with both SMD and THT soldering

•Interest or experience in installation-based projects, interactive technology or control systems

•Wiring, looms, enclosures or cabling experience

•Knowledge of show control, lighting or audio systems

•Experience creating project documentation or following technical records and change logs

•Willingness to travel occasionally for installs, handovers or support – sometimes internationally

•Comfortable attending training courses when relevant, to keep your skills sharp or develop in new areas

•Competent user of Microsoft Office or similar software for notes, reports and communication

What You Bring

You might be a seasoned engineer or a hands-on tinkerer with a brilliant portfolio. Whether you have a degree, a workshop in your garage or just a talent for getting electronics working, if you can prove you’re capable, we’re listening.

This isn’t an entry-level role; we’re looking for capable individuals who can hit the ground running

What Helps You Thrive Here

You’re curious, collaborative and take pride in making things work. You enjoy the challenge of balancing creativity with precision. If you’re energised by learning, solving real-world problems and seeing your work in action you’ll fit right in. We’re a small highly experienced team that values clarity, good humour, mutual respect and getting things done properly.

Job Type: Full-Time

Work Location: Sheffield-based, in-person only (no remote working)

Training: Relevant training courses available where required

Send us your CV and a cover letter. We do read them and it helps us understand how you think and what motivates you.

Got a portfolio, GitHub or photos of your projects? Even better. We love seeing work in action.

Don’t meet every single requirement? No problem. Still apply. We value skill, mindset and potential more than ticking every box.
