Locum Consultant Anaesthetist/Specialist interest in Periop Medicine

Applications are invited for a 12-month post of Locum Consultant in Anaesthesia with a special interest in Perioperative medicine at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH).

10 Programmed Activities will be offered - 9 Direct Clinical Care (which includes 0.5 PA for on call) and 1 Supporting Professional Activities.

The specific job plan will be developed in partnership between the needs of the department and the successful applicant. It is expected that the initial job plan will be reviewed after 6 months of service. Initial job plan will include sessions within all major units at the RNOH including the peripheral nerve injury unit, sarcoma unit, joint replacement unit, spinal unit, shoulder unit, foot & ankle unit, and anaesthetic pre-assessment clinic. Candidates must be able to demonstrate clinical experience at either fellowship or consultant level for perioperative medicine, including anaesthesia for complex orthopaedic and complex spinal deformity surgery.

Job plans may be changed to accommodate where possible the specific requests of the candidate and the needs of the department.

Currently the Trust permits flexibility in time and space to accommodate SPAs.


Main duties of the job

To maintain the highest clinical standards in the practice of anaesthesia and will undertake any reasonable clinical responsibility which relates to providing anaesthesia services.

Actively involved in the management of the department including attendance at the anaesthetic department meetings, MDT and regular morning meetings. They will be expected to take an active and engaged role in departmental and academic responsibilities as allocated by agreement across the department, including cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences as appropriate.

Engage fully and proactively in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit.

The postholder will be expected to engage in continuing professional development.

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and their Clinical Director on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer prior to the commencement date of the appointment.

The job plan shall be reviewed annually. It will cover all aspects of a consultant's professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities, including a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external.

It shall also include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.

RNOH is the largest orthopaedic hospital in the UK and is regarded as a leader in the field of orthopaedics both nationally and internationally. Our range of services includes Joint Reconstruction, Spinal Surgery, Bone Tumour & Soft Tissue Sarcomas (supra regional service), Peripheral Nerve Injury, Paediatric Orthopaedics, Congenital Deformity, and Complex & Revision Joint Work. There is also a dedicated Spinal Cord Injury Centre receiving referrals from London and the South of England. Our clinical effectiveness is enhanced by working in partnership with University College London and the UCL Institute of Orthopaedic and Musculo-skeletal Science, based within the Stanmore Campus. Our main hospital site at Stanmore is located in extensive grounds set amongst green belt countryside. There is easy road access from the M1, the A1(M) and the A41. We are within easy reach of London. There is a free bus service to and from the two local tube stations on the Northern and Jubilee lines. Currently there is free parking within the hospital grounds. There is an outpatient department facility at Bolsover Street, near Great Portland Street tube.


Job responsibilities

Jobs with 10 Programmed Activities will be offered as 9 Direct Clinical Care (DCC), 1 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). The specific job plan will be developed in partnership between the needs of the department and the successful applicant. There is scope for increasing SPA activity, either by reducing DCC activity or by additional programmed activities, by mutual agreement, for specific Trust related roles.

The number of PAs will be adjusted for part time consultants in discussion with the Clinical Director.

The post will have direct clerical and operational support as well as secondary administrative support to facilitate the consultants participation in national and local audits and registries.

Departments are moving towards a team-based approach to their workload.

Resources are deployed flexibly in the way that best meets patients needs. The post holder would be expected to participate in this approach.

The job plan will involve the following commitments: -

10 PAs including:

Elective operating lists

Pre-assessment clinics

On Call commitment

1 PA Supporting Professional Activities


Person Specification


Qualifications

* FRCA or GMC recognised equivalent qualification
* CCT in Anaesthesia or equivalent training
* Entry on GMC Specialist Registrar with CCT in anaesthesia or equivalent or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview
* ALS & APLS/EPLS
* Full GMC registration
* Experience in anaesthesia for specialist orthopaedic and complex spinal deformity surgery
* Experience in Intensive Care
* Dual CCT in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
* FFICM Qualification
* Evidence of contributing to research (i.e. local lead for regional / national studies, experience with recruiting patients to RCTs, up to date with GCP)
* Evidence of teaching qualification
* Leadership experience - e.g. departmental rota/leave coordinator, including evidence of formal management training.


Experience

* Experience in Anaesthesia for specialist complex orthopaedic surgery
* Experience of Anaesthesia for spinal deformity


Skills

* Track record of establishing and maintaining good working relationships with patients, carers and multidisciplinary colleagues.
* Effectively work within a team environment
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Competent in all aspects of skills appropriate to the role.
* Ability to effectively supervise junior medical staff
* Understanding of wellbeing
* Experience in conflict management and able to motivate colleagues (medical and non-medical)
* Evidence of sustained commitment to organising and delivering training / teaching to nursing and medical staff, at Trust / Regional or National level


Management Skills

* Understanding the NHS management structure
* Evidence of management training
* History of CIP involvement and delivery


Teaching and Training

* Evidence of interest in teaching and training
* Teaching course
* Evidence of ability to undertake assessments of trainees
* Demonstrate an interest in teaching and training
