Research Grants Officer

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Blood Cancer UK research team following the recent launch of our ambitious new five-year research strategy which seeks to accelerate progress towards the day when no one dies from blood cancer or the side effects of its treatments. This post sits alongside two other research grants officers responsible for our clinical research and fellowships portfolios. You will be an integral part of the research funding team and will be responsible for a range of pre and post award grants management activities required for the effective administration of our discovery and translational research portfolio. Expected travel for this role includes relevant meetings or conferences, team workshops, team/department away days and attendance at two all staff away days annually. The London office is open for use by all staff from Monday –Thursday The research funding team holds a routine anchor day in the office every Tuesday for all team members who are able to attend. Attendance at an anchor day at least once a month is expected for all members of the research funding team living outside London. Key Responsibilities

MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES
Leading the successful delivery of the annual Blood Cancer UK project grant scheme and providing effective support for a portfolio of other discovery and translation focused funding schemes in line with Blood Cancer UK’s research strategy and Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) guidance.
1. developing application forms and applicant guidance
2. setup and testing of new rounds on our online Grants Management System (GMS)
3. coordinating call launch processes and responding to applicant queries
4. managing peer review processes
5. organising and supporting delivery of Research Funding Committee meetings and other activities and acting as the key point of contact for committee members
6. drafting minutes, feedback for applicants, outcome and award letters and supporting grant activation
Oversight and management of a portfolio of active awards within the Blood Cancer UK discovery and translation grant portfolio.
7. managing queries from grant holders and requests for grant variations including extension requests and staffing changes working closely with the finance team on financial management of awards including reviewing and approving quarterly grant claims, invoices and writebacks
8. stewardship of new applicants and existing grant holders, ensuring that optimal relationships are built and maintained. supporting progress monitoring and identification of outcomes and impact of awards in the Discovery and Translation portfolio
9. supporting the work of key internal stakeholders including our Research Impact and Engagement Lead and our fundraising and communications teams by providing clear accurate and timely information about awards in your portfolio
Supporting the optimisation of Blood Cancer Uk’s grants management processes
10. playing a key role in the procurement and implementation of a new Grants Management System over the next 18 months
11. developing into a superuser of the new GMS and providing support to internal and external stakeholders on the use of the system
12. actively participating in identifying and implementing improvements to existing grants management processes and ways of working
General Responsibilities
13. providing support for the other research funding officers portfolios, funding calls or committees when required
14. contributing to the team being proactive and supportive, and working effectively and efficiently to achieve agreed objectives.
15. contributing to the development and maintenance of strong internal relationships across the charity
16. undertaking other work as required by the Research Funding Lead and Deputy Director of Research

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Knowledge
17. Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline
18. Knowledge of medical research and/or grant funding
Skills
19. Effective and open communicator with the ability to build strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders and to deliver work in a way that meets stakeholder needs and expectations
20. High performing and accountable with the ability to manage time and workload effectively and to lead projects independently
21. Technical expertise to understand scientific papers, applications and discussions and to identify the key information required for peer review, applicant feedback and post award monitoring.
22. Digitally literate and open to exploring the use of new technologies
Experience
23. Experience of research grant administration and management or of undertaking cancer research
24. Experience or understanding of digital research grants management systems and workflows (e.g. Grant Tracker, Flexi Grant or similar)
