Deputy Manager – Job Description

Main Purpose of the Job:
To assist the manager in achieving the aims and objectives of the Statement of Purpose. To deputise in the absence of the Registered Manager. To support and manage staff to meet the needs of children and young people. To undertake direct work with children and young people as appropriate. To be responsible for managing child protection concerns and complaints. To work in partnership with other professionals to achieve the best outcomes for young people. To offer supervision and support to senior staff in line with National Minimum Standards.
Duties & Responsibilities
To meet the needs of children through:
* Ensuring each young person has an allocated key worker.
* Ensuring staff are aware of each child’s placement plan and their responsibilities for its implementation.
* Attending childcare reviews and planning meetings to provide information and achieve the best outcomes for young people.
* Undertaking direct work with young people and acting as an appropriate role model.
* Developing systems for consulting young people about the quality of care they receive.
* Maintaining accurate records in logs, continuation sheets, and files for monitoring and evaluation.
* Working with parents, carers, and other professionals to safeguard and promote the welfare of young people.
* Chairing children’s meetings and facilitating consultations with young people.
* Acting as an appropriate adult at PACE interviews.
To manage a staff team through:
* Providing managerial control and direction regarding staff duties and responsibilities.
* Assisting with recruitment, retention, and induction training of staff.
* Supervising new starters during their probation.
* Developing a management style balancing control and staff decision-making opportunities.
* Planning shifts and ensuring their smooth operation.
* Providing consultation, advice, and support to staff daily.
* Offering 1:1 supervision aligned with National Minimum Standards.
* Identifying and developing staff training and development needs.
* Conducting annual staff appraisals.
* Addressing conduct and competence issues and conducting investigations when necessary.
* Supporting the Registered Manager in staff development and delegation of duties.
* Participating in team and staff meetings for communication and development.
* Ensuring staff adhere to policies, procedures, and standards.
To develop systems for effective resource allocation:
* Maintaining adequate staffing levels.
* Managing budgets effectively, including petty cash and attendance records.
* Ensuring company vehicles are maintained and clean.
* Monitoring the building’s condition and arranging repairs as needed.
To promote efficient operation of the Home:
* Developing routines with staff and young people.
* Maintaining a clean and orderly environment.
* Creating rotas that meet children’s needs and facilitate proper handovers.
* Implementing reporting and recording systems compliant with standards.
