Post Title: Teaching SENDCo Reports to: Head Teacher / Proprietor/Directors Location: Fairfield Residential School Contract: [Full-time] Salary:£35K – £39K (Dependent on experience and qualifications Purpose of the Role The Teaching SENDCo is responsible for leading, coordinating, and delivering high-quality SEND provision across the school, while also holding a teaching responsibility. The postholder will ensure that all pupils’ Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and Personal Education Plans (PEPs) are implemented effectively, reviewed regularly, and translated into meaningful, personalised learning experiences. The role is central to ensuring that pupils feel safe, supported, and able to thrive, and that provision meets statutory requirements, independent school standards, and best practice for pupils with a wide range of needs. Key Responsibilities Strategic SEND Leadership Lead the strategic development of SEND provision across the school, in line with the school’s vision, intent, and values. Ensure full compliance with SEND legislation, the SEND Code of Practice, and independent school standards. Act as the named SENDCo, maintaining oversight of all EHCPs and associated documentation. Teaching and Learning Deliver high-quality teaching to pupils, working 1:1 or 2:1, tailored to individual needs and EHCP outcomes. Design, implement, and review individualised curricula that support academic, social, emotional, and life skills development. Ensure teaching approaches promote emotional regulation, engagement, independence, and progress, recognising that progress may take many forms. Model and promote quality first teaching and inclusive practice across the school. EHCP and PEP Oversight Maintain responsibility for all EHCPs, ensuring outcomes are clearly translated into daily practice. Coordinate and contribute to annual reviews, interim reviews, and multi-agency meetings. Oversee and support the implementation of PEPs for pupils in care, ensuring targets are relevant, ambitious, and reviewed regularly. Track and evidence progress against EHCP and PEP outcomes using appropriate assessment tools. Safeguarding and Pupil Welfare Ensure that safeguarding, wellbeing, and emotional regulation are at the heart of all provision. Work closely with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (or act as DSL if appropriate) to ensure pupils are safe, supported, and listened to. Promote a culture of mutual respect, trust, and positive relationships, where pupils feel valued and understood. Staff Support and Development Support, advise, and guide teaching and support staff on SEND strategies, behaviour support, and inclusive practice. Lead or contribute to staff training, particularly around autism, communication needs, emotional regulation, and trauma-informed practice. Ensure consistent implementation of individual strategies and support plans across the school. Partnership Working Build and maintain strong relationships with parents and carers, ensuring clear communication and collaboration. Liaise with external professionals including educational psychologists, therapists, social workers, and virtual schools. Act as a key point of contact for local authorities, particularly regarding EHCP and PEP processes. Monitoring, Assessment, and Reporting Monitor and evaluate the impact of SEND provision, using qualitative and quantitative evidence. Ensure accurate and up-to-date record keeping, including provision maps, review reports, and assessment data. Contribute to school self-evaluation, inspection preparation, and improvement planning. Person Specification Essential * Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). * Significant experience in a SENDCo role or assistant SENDCo role. * Significant experience working with pupils with SEND, including autism and complex needs. * Strong understanding of EHCPs, PEPs, and statutory SEND processes. * Experience of delivering highly personalised teaching, including 1:1 or small group settings. * Excellent communication and relationship-building skills. * Strong commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and pupil wellbeing. Desirable * Experience working in an independent or specialist provision. * Experience supporting pupils in care and working with Virtual Schools. * Knowledge of specialist curricula (e.g. EQUALS, informal or semi-formal pathways). * National Award for SEND Coordination (or willingness to work towards it if required for the role).
