Our energy-efficient Solid-Oxide Electrolyzer Cell System (SOEC) has many applications in making useful chemicals. Our research labs are located on the St. Andrews University campus, which allows for robust collaboration with faculty, students and post-docs. We are looking to add a Senior LaboratoryTechnician to our growing research staff. As the Senior Laboratory Technician you will assist laboratory scientists in day-to-day lab operations involving various elements. You will conduct analysis and experimental procedure as well as perform technical tasks, including operating and maintaining equipment. We will count on you to keep the lab in order, maintain certifications and calibrate equipment and you will play a lead role in the research, recommendation and ordering of lab equipment. You will oversee safety procedures in the lab and ensure compliance. As we grow, you will supervise lab staff. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience working in a chemistry lab or the equivalent, including experience utilizing chemistry equipment. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience required and a Bachelor’s with Honours would be ideal. Position Purpose Senior Lab Technician The Senio r Laboratory technician assists engineers and materials scientists in day-to-day lab operations involving various elements. They perform routine technical tasks, including operating and maintaining equipment, as well as conducting analysis and experimental procedure. They are responsible for keeping the lab in order, maintaining certifications and calibrating equipment. Research, recommend and order lab equipment. May supervise lab staff. Oversee safety procedures in the lab. Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks • Ability to demonstrate proper laboratory safety techniques and ensure that good laboratory practices are being followed. • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing. • Knowledge of chemical and physical hazards and their control. • Ability to operate computer using various software packages. • Ability to safely operate scientific equipment instrumentation. • Working knowledge of material science and chemistry. • Ability to set up and calibrate a Mass Spectrometer (MAS) & Gas Spectrometer (GS) • Manage maintenance and cleaning of all lab equipment • Manage the schedule of use of the lab equipment • Conduct and update inventory reports • Primary/secondary diagnostic, troubleshooting, calibration/repair of scientific equipment. • Maintain proper levels of lab supplies, including researching vendors and defining product/material specifications to be purchased. • Must be very organized and able to prioritize and expedite based on needs. • Ability to operate microscopes, ovens, extrusion equipment. Qualifications 3-5 years of experience in a chemistry lab or related experience. Experience utilizing chemical equipment. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required. Special Position Requirements Local travel required between sites. Must have reliable transportation. Position may use solvent chemistry and must be able to pass respirator training. Preferences Bachelor’s Degree with Honors preferred Work Requirements Must have the ability to legally work in the United Kingdom.
