Locally Employed Doctor (Standard) - Burns + Plastics until Aug 2026

We are looking to appoint a Fixed Term Locally Employed Doctor -- Standard (SHO/ CT/ FY3 level) within the Plastic Department, in the department of Burns and Plastic Surgery. The post will be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, part of the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. This is a short term post commencing as soon as possible until 04/08/2026 due to service needs, with the possibility of extension depending on rota gaps and performance.

We are seeking an enthusiastic candidate keen to pursue a career in Plastic Surgery or willing to gain basic plastic surgical skills as part of their interest in a career in many other surgical specialties such as Orthopaedics, ENT, oculoplastic surgery, general surgery, urology. This post is ideally designed for enthusiastic candidates to build up on their surgical skills in one of the largest Plastics, Burns and Hand Centre's in the UK. The job is an ideal stepping stone for candidates interested in a career in many surgical specialties including Plastic Surgery. Along with gaining surgical skills, the post provides excellent opportunities to participate in audits, research and teaching -- all of which would help to achieve required competencies for candidates to be eligible for Specialty training post. The department has a long history of research activity with regular participation in national and international meetings.


Main duties of the job

* Gaining experience in the assessment and management of elective and emergency plastic surgery patients working as a team.
* Participating in daily acute on calls.
* Participating in daily ward rounds.
* Ability to participate in ongoing clinical research trials within the department.
* Opportunities to start or participate in departmental audit and quality improvement projects.
* Analysis of data with potential to present at conferences, meetings and assist with writing publications.
* Liaising with other medical, nursing and therapy staff within the plastic surgery team and as appropriate and contributing to the clinical service and trials currently ongoing.
* While this is not a training post, it is envisaged that the post-holder will gain considerable experience and knowledge in the medical and surgical management of various plastic surgery patients.

Job responsibilities

The successful candidates will be allocated to the different sub specialties of plastic surgery -- Burns, Hands and General Plastic and reconstructive surgery on a rotational basis. The main duties and responsibilities include gaining experience and competencies in initial assessment, preparation and management of elective and emergency plastic surgery patients under supervision of Senior residents and Consultants. In addition -- they will have allocated theatre sessions to gain experience in different aspects of plastic surgery. In addition, the candidates will be able to participate in departments academic activities including teaching sessions, audits, research activities. The successful candidates will be allocated dedicated Educational and Clinical supervisors to guide with their progress during their placement based on ISCP curriculum to achieve competencies required to be eligible for specialty training post.

The appointee must demonstrate that they have a background interest in a career in surgery and have successfully completed Foundation Training. It is desirable for the candidates to have completed Core Surgical training and have passed MRCS -- although not essential.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Full registration with the General Medical Council GMC, with licence to practice.
* Completion of Foundation Years.


Experience

* Actively working as an SHO or SpR or equivalent in Plastic Surgery.
* Ability to work well with colleagues and within a team demonstrated by 360 degree feedback.
* Available to start within 2 weeks of interview date.


Additional Criteria

* Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
* Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures.
* Regular participation in audit and service evaluations.
