Taking responsibility for the North West Unit we are responsible for 1,422km of trunk road, stretching from the rugged beauty of Thurso and Wick in the far north, down to the Cowal peninsula in Argyll and Bute. It connects communities from Uig on the Isle of Skye to the historic cities of Perth and Stirling, offering a unique opportunity to work across a landscape that’s as diverse as it is inspiring.
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer to join the team as Design Manager on a full-time basis.
Reporting to the Operating Company Representative you will be the primary point of contact for all design matters relating to roads and structures. You will lead the coordination, integration, preparation, review, and approval of design activities across the Unit, ensuring high standards and compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements.
Roles and Responsibilities:
1. Lead and manage the delivery of all design work for roads and structures within the Unit, ensuring contract standards are met and work is carried out by qualified staff.
2. Appoint and assign design staff based on discipline, competence, experience, and qualifications.
3. Visible leadership of health and safety, environmental management and adherence to the company’s management systems.
4. Oversee the inspection and maintenance of all structures within the Unit.
5. Coordinate with stakeholders, including internal teams, external partners and regulatory bodies.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
6. Degree in appropriate engineering discipline.
7. Proven experience in a similar role, ideally within a trunk road maintenance contract or road infrastructure design environment.
8. Chartered Engineer status with a recognised UK engineering institution (e.g., ICE, IStructE, IHE, CIHT).
9. Strong leadership, coordination, and communication skills.
10. Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and ensure design integrity across diverse projects.
