Speech and Language Therapy Support Worker

You will join a highly experienced and supportive team, well-regarded by service users and multi-disciplinary colleagues, and supported by a team of support workers and administrators. The team works flexibly to provide intervention across outpatient clinics, home, video, and telephone appointments. You will also have opportunities to work with colleagues in the acute trust and specialists from other disciplines, social care, and the voluntary sector, with regular access to videofluoroscopy clinics.

We are committed to personal, professional, and service development. We hold regular service improvement and governance meetings, with working parties involving all staff. We have regular supervision and appraisals, encourage self-directed learning, CEN membership and learning from others, including colleagues in other professions. We have also secured training for the whole team from national experts in response to developing clinical need.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic person, with relevant care experience ideally in the field of Speech and Language Therapy / Therapies, who is passionate about supporting adults with swallowing and / or communication disorders in the community. This post requires you to work closely alongside qualified Speech and Language Therapists to deliver therapy to patients across a wide range of conditions including stroke, voice, Parkinson's Disease and dementia. You will join a highly experienced and supportive team, well-regarded by service users and multi-disciplinary colleagues, and supported by a team of administrators. The team works flexibly to provide intervention across outpatient clinics, home, video, and telephone appointments. We are committed to personal, professional, and service development. Following completion of competencies in both communication and swallowing you will be required to work more autonomously and will be responsible for a small number of patients; always overseen by a qualified therapist.

Person Specification


Education / Qualifications and Relevant experience

* Good education up to GCSE's (C or above) or equivalent
* Evidence of recent relevant study - NVQ Level lll or BTEC national diploma in appropriate area or equivalent relevant qualification such as nutrition or health related qualification.
* Experience of working in a care environment e.g. hospital wards, therapy department.
* Experience of working unsupervised whilst implementing simple treatments or care plans
* Basic counselling skills
* Experience of Speech and Language Therapy


Skills and Aptitude

* Able to demonstrate empathy, motivate and support patients with impaired cognitive abilities ir physical senses
* Computer literate - ability to demonstrate use of programmes and search engines, keyboard skills


Knowledge and Abilities

* Some knowledge and understanding of the impact of communication difficulties such as Stroke
* Ability to work as a lone worker
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
