Job Introduction

Mechanical Engineer

Hydro International is now proudly part of Tarmac, within the wider CRH Group — combining specialist wastewater engineering expertise with the scale, stability and long‑term opportunity of one of the UK’s leading construction materials businesses.

With over 40 years of engineering excellence, Hydro International provides advanced water and wastewater solutions that help municipal and industrial customers improve performance, reduce environmental impact and protect communities from flooding and pollution.

Operating in more than 40 countries and supported by an international distribution network, Hydro plays a key role within CRH Infrastructure Products, leading the sector with innovative, sustainable and safety‑first solutions.

This role sits within our UK Wastewater Services (UKWWS) team, supporting water utility companies by upgrading and improving sewage treatment sites across the UK.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced and qualified Mechanical Engineer to join our Nottingham‑based team, supporting wastewater treatment projects nationwide.

This is a hands‑on, site‑based role where you’ll work across sewage and wastewater treatment sites throughout the UK, installing, commissioning and maintaining specialist water filtration and mechanical systems. The role involves regular working away from home, including overnight stays, along with occasional work within Hydro workshops across the UK.

If you enjoy practical engineering work, on‑site problem‑solving and travelling as part of a close‑knit engineering team, this role offers genuine variety and long‑term career potential.

What You’ll Be Doing

1. Installing, commissioning, setting up and testing water filtration and mechanical systems on wastewater and sewage treatment sites
2. Carrying out site inspections, fault‑finding and surveys to support quotation and project planning
3. Accessing and interpreting technical instructions using mobile electronic devices
4. Working at height, in confined spaces and outdoors on live wastewater sites
5. Working away from home regularly, including overnight stays
6. Supporting work within Hydro workshops across the UK when required
7. Working collaboratively with engineers, technicians and other trades across the business
8. Maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality and regulatory compliance at all times

About You

You’ll be an experienced Mechanical Engineer who brings:

9. A current, valid UK driving licence
10. City & Guilds qualification (or equivalent)
11. Completion of a recognised mechanical apprenticeship
12. Experience working in industrial, utilities or heavy engineering environments
13. Willingness to work outdoors, at height and in confined spaces
14. A flexible approach to working away from home

Why Join Us?

As part of Tarmac and the CRH Group, you’ll benefit from secure, long‑term employment, industry‑leading safety standards and the opportunity to build a lasting engineering career on essential UK infrastructure projects.

Our benefits include:

15. Competitive salary
16. Discretionary annual bonus
17. Overnight subsistence allowance
18. Additional stay‑away payments
19. Life assurance – 2× annual salary
20. Pension scheme with employer contribution
21. Company sick pay
22. Minimum 23 days’ holiday plus bank holidays
23. Flu vaccinations
24. DSE eye tests
25. Mental Health First Aiders and wellbeing support
26. Ongoing training, qualifications and development opportunities
27. Clear progression and advancement opportunities

What Hydro International (Part of Tarmac) Offers You

28. A culture that values development, progression and internal promotion
29. Continued investment in engineering capability and professional qualifications
30. Opportunities to progress within Hydro, Tarmac and the wider CRH Group
31. The chance to work on critical UK wastewater infrastructure where your skills make a real difference

Tarmac is committed to being a Forces‑friendly employer. If you’re transitioning from a military background, we’ll support your move into a successful civilian engineering career.

We’re proud to be part of CRH and to be an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for everyone. If you need any reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process, please let us know.
