Infection Prevention and Control Specialist Practitioner

Job Summary: This Band 5/6 development post offers development opportunities and support to enable Band 6 (Specialist Practitioner) readiness within a timeframe suitable for the post holder, based on prior experience and achievement of competencies. The position is open to new graduates interested in infection prevention and control and with clinical experience through placements, volunteer work, or non-registered staff roles. Full support will be provided for completing preceptorship and required competencies. Candidates with relevant existing experience may be appointed directly to a band 6 post.

The post holder will be responsible for developing and delivering the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) service in line with local and national policies to meet the needs of acute (Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust) and community (Cornwall Partnership Foundation Trust) settings. Responsibilities include providing clinical advice on infection prevention, management, monitoring, and control to staff.

The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of relevant clinical experience within their specialty or professional practice, or at least 2 years of work experience in a clinical setting if undertaking a developmental role. They will use their specialist knowledge to support infection prevention efforts.


Main duties include:

1. Undertaking clinical assessments, reviewing signs and results to support patient treatment plans.
2. Producing accurate documentation and patient records in compliance with legislation, policies, and procedures.
3. Advising staff on local, trust, and national IPC policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure patient safety and clinical governance.
4. Supporting staff development in IPC, encouraging shared learning and external best practices.
5. Developing and contributing to local IPC guidelines, interpreting national protocols to enhance patient safety.
6. Sensitively challenging non-compliance with IPC policies.
7. deputising for the IPC Lead Nurse and Senior Specialist Practitioners as needed.
8. Teaching and supporting IPC education across multidisciplinary teams.
9. Delivering mandatory IPC training, corporate induction, and other related education.
10. Developing IPC Link Practitioners to support and educate colleagues in infection prevention.
11. Planning and conducting audits, research, and development activities, providing feedback accordingly.

Person Specification:

* Essential: NMC or HPC registration, minimum 2 years clinical experience, basic computer skills, valid UK driver’s license.
* Desirable: Qualification or training in IPC, teaching/mentoring qualification, preceptorship completion, experience as IPAC practitioner or in IPC-related roles, audit/research experience, teaching experience.


Additional Criteria:

* Evidence of CPD, willingness to undertake further training including preceptorship if in a developmental role.
