Our Optometry Department is seeking a Clinical Assistant to join the team at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. Our diverse clinical workload includes paediatrics, corneal, YAG capsulotomy, cataract, research clinics, specialised contact lens fitting (adult and paediatric), and low visual aids.

Main duties of the job
The Clinical Assistant supports the Optometrist with clinical and administrative tasks. Clinical duties include performing imaging (pentacam, specular microscopy), visual field testing, teaching contact lens care, measuring visual acuity (adults and children), and intraocular pressure. Administrative duties focus on contact lens processing, ordering, and dispatch. Additional responsibilities include supporting low vision, research, infection control, and handling optometry queries.
Successful candidates will demonstrate enthusiasm, understanding, and the ability to interpret relevant information while maintaining patient safety and professional standards. Prior experience in Ophthalmology is desirable but not essential, as full training will be provided.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
* Foundation degree / NVQ level 4 or NVQ level 3 plus relevant courses or experience
* Full driving license (if working in community areas)
Knowledge & Experience
* Understanding of clinical assistant roles in healthcare, e.g., BIOS or optical assistants
* Knowledge of accountability and delegation issues
* Courteous, respectful, and helpful demeanor
* Experience working under indirect supervision within a multidisciplinary team
* Compliance with mandatory and statutory training
* Supportive of the organization’s positive image
* Experience in the speciality area and supporting development of others
* Knowledge of relevant policies and guidelines
Skills & Abilities
* Basic IT skills
* Effective communication with the public and healthcare providers
* Ability to handle unpredictable workload and patient interactions
