Course number and title: PPG2011H-S - Ethics and the Public Interest
Course description: Ethics and the Public Interest provides a range of frameworks, drawn from a variety of cultural perspectives, for analyzing and managing the complex ethical dilemmas that public officials confront. It is a course in politically informed moral reasoning.
The practice of public administration is widely understood to be guided by certain core values and principles. Yet with the growing complexity of the state have come changing demands, structural reforms, and the creation of a more uncertain environment. Participants in this course will be provided with a set of intellectual tools for responding to this new environment, and for thinking about such issues as ethical leadership, public accountability, relating to ministers, and dealing with vague or inconsistent demands. It is organized around a discussion of two major issues: first, it asks what values should guide decision-making in areas of administrative discretion; second, it looks at questions of compliance, in order to explore ways that the public service can continue to meet the highest standards of professional ethics.

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2026 -– April 30, 2026
Salary: Sessional Lecturer I - $9,820.70; Sessional Lecturer I, Long Term - $10,510.04; Sessional Lecturer II - $10,510.04; Sessional Lecturer II (Long Term) - $10,760.28; Sessional Lecturer III - $10,760.28; Sessional Lecturers III (Long Term) - $11,030.36
Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduate degree in Philosophy required. Extensive and senior professional policy practitioner experience required. Teaching experience at the graduate level required.
Preferred Qualifications: Completed PhD preferred.
Description of duties: Teaching at the graduate level, developing the syllabus, teaching three-hour classes, providing weekly office hours for academic counseling of students, preparing and delivering course material, preparing and delivering assignments and tests, supervising TA(s), marking student work and submitting grades.
