Toolroom Manager – Smethwick, West Midlands

Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled Toolroom Manager to join a forward-thinking manufacturing business at the forefront of innovation. With a brand-new Innovation Centre equipped to deliver cutting-edge tooling, jigs, and fixture solutions, this role offers the chance to lead and optimise toolroom operations in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage toolroom staff, driving accuracy, efficiency, and high-quality standards.
* Oversee work routing, planning, scheduling, and material procurement.
* Coordinate external processes including heat treatment, coatings, and secondary operations.
* Monitor, control, and continuously improve toolroom manufacturing processes.
* Establish and maintain standard operating procedures, ensuring best practice is consistently followed.
* Develop and manage preventative maintenance schedules for all plant and equipment.
* Uphold the highest levels of health and safety at all times.
* Supervise apprentices, working closely with external training providers.
* Manage precision tooling projects from conception through to design (AutoCAD/SolidWorks), try-out, commissioning, and handover to production.
* Foster collaboration and communication across departments to support company-wide objectives.
* Demonstrate a proactive and solutions-focused approach to all challenges.
Qualifications
* Minimum 15 years of hands-on toolroom experience, with at least 5 years in a managerial or supervisory role.
* Strong expertise in tooling fault-finding, modification, and maintenance.
* Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks.
* Experience with fine punch tooling or similar would be advantageous.
* Proven ability to lead teams and optimise processes.
* Commitment to mentoring and developing apprentices.
* Confident IT skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
* Tool design experience is highly desirable.
