Overview

Our Maternity Service at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) are on a journey of improvement. The service strives to improve the experience for expectant mothers and their families by listening to service users with our Trust board who have invested in maternity services financially and in staff and service development. The Maternity Services works in partnership with the Local Maternity and Neonatal Systems (LMNS) to drive the national maternity agenda forward to improve safety and quality of our services.


Responsibilities

* The Deputy Head of Midwifery (HOM) is a senior managerial and clinical leadership post. The primary role is to support the Head and Director of Midwifery by providing high level professional support and advice to all staff in the midwifery service.
* Oversee the day-to-day operational function of the services to ensure safe, high-quality care for mothers and babies, with alignment to the wider corporate professional agenda.
* Collaborate with the Head of Midwifery to exercise delegated responsibility and accountability for clinical standards, patient experience, and safe, effective service delivery across the maternity service.
* Play a key role in the transformation and development of maternity services, including strategic vision and direction of future service provision and development of an empowered workforce.
* Lead workforce management for midwifery and maternity support worker teams, including recruitment and retention, staff development and training, and accountability for staffing budgets and establishments, together with the senior midwifery team.
* Be a visible and professional leader of midwives, nurses and support staff; act as a clinically credible practitioner, advocate and role model to deliver a safe, high-quality, personalised service for women choosing UHDB for their maternity experience.
* Assist the Head of Midwifery in operational accountability for the Maternity Service and workforce, and contribute to setting and delivering strategic direction for midwifery teams; provide effective visible leadership and contribute toward the financial forecast and delivery of contracted activity.
