Principal Cable System Engineer – Jacobs

Your impact
Jacobs is playing a leading role in the global energy transition. As our UK and Continental Europe team continues to expand, we are seeking a Principal Cable System Engineer to support a range of high‑profile projects across our Power & Energy portfolio. This includes high voltage AIS and GIS Substations, transmission system assets, HVDC interconnectors, and energy storage systems. You will lead the design delivery for Cable System Projects up to 400 kV, from the tendering stage through to project handover.
Responsibilities
* Develop HV/EHV cabling system specifications, concept and detailed design, and conduct design reviews and site supervision.
* Provide technical support to the team on all aspects of HV cable system engineering and design.
* Prepare plant and equipment technical specifications, power cable route specifications, tender specifications, technical, and progress reports.
* Ensure correct and accurate interface with other engineering functions and conduct internal and external meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors.
* Perform technical calculations including cable size, rating calculations, TMF and EMF calculations, sheath‑induced voltage calculations and others.
* Verify designs and ensure compliance with CDM regulations, relevant legislation, and company procedures.
* Assist with temporary works design schemes and maintain good working relations with client, designer, and supply chain.
* Ensure drawings and specification documents contain accurate information for construction, request missing information timely to avoid delays.
* Complete inspection and test plans as required by PMP/specification, check dimension accuracy and quality.
* Support factory inspections (FAT) and promote best practice in health, safety, and environmental matters in collaboration with the SHQE department.
* Advise engineers on setting‑out methods and techniques, prepare written risk assessments and method statements for work control.
Requirements
* Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Power Engineering.
* Previous experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in the energy sector.
* Extensive experience in a cable‑related role supporting FEED design and/or detailed design.
* Able to manage and lead HV/EHV cable designs at all project stages.
* Experienced user of CYMCAP for cable system design.
* Experience working at EHV transmission voltages and designing HV and EHV cable systems for both HVAC and HVDC systems.
* Familiarity with National Grid and DNO standards and processes.
