Professional Duties of a Teacher

1. Exercise of general professional duties
A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties as circumstances may require, including:
* if employed as a teacher under the reasonable direction of the school principal;
* if employed by a board on terms where he/she is not assigned to a specific school, under the reasonable direction of the board and the principal of any school where he/she may be required to work.
1. Exercise of particular duties
Teachers shall perform duties reasonably assigned by the principal or the board, including:
* performing duties in accordance with directions from the principal;
* performing duties as assigned by the board or principal when not assigned to a specific school.
Key Responsibilities
1. Planning
* Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
* Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;
* Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils' development and progress.
1. General
* Promoting pupils' progress and well-being;
* Providing advice and guidance on educational, social, and career matters;
* Making records and reports on pupils' personal and social needs;
* Communicating with parents and external bodies;
* Participating in meetings related to these activities.
1. Assessment/Reporting
Providing assessments, reports, and references on pupils, ensuring confidentiality.
1. Staff Development
* Participating in staff development and performance reviews;
* Reviewing and improving teaching methods and programs;
* Contributing to curriculum development and pastoral arrangements.
1. Discipline and Health & Safety
* Maintaining good order and discipline;
* Safeguarding pupils' health and safety;
* Participating in school meetings related to curriculum and administration.
1. Public Examinations
Preparing pupils for examinations, assessing, recording, and supervising during exams.
1. Management and Administration
* Contributing to staff recruitment and development;
* Managing or coordinating other teachers' work;
* Participating in curriculum and school management activities;
* Handling administrative tasks such as attendance and resource management.
1. Work Schedule
* Availability for 195 days/year, with specific hours and duties as directed;
* Maximum teaching hours per week: 25 hours in primary and special schools, 23.5 in secondary;
1. Cover Duties
Supervising pupils during teacher absences, with specific provisions based on school size and policies.
