SEND Teaching Assistant PMLD Focus This school is seeking a strong, dedicated, and compassionate SEND Teaching Assistant with experience supporting pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD). The Role The ideal candidate will have experience in supporting students with PMLD in a school setting. The successful applicant will work closely with the teaching and support team to provide tailored assistance that enables every student to access learning and achieve their full potential. This includes working with students who are non-verbal, require sensory stimulation, mobility support, and personal care. Responsibilities Provide 1:1 or small group support to pupils with PMLD, including assistance with physical needs, personal care, feeding, and communication. Use specialist resources such as sensory equipment, communication aids (e.g. switches, eye-gaze), and mobility support tools under guidance from professionals. Assist in the implementation of personalised learning programmes and Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Collaborate closely with teachers, SENCOs, therapists (e.g., physiotherapists, speech and language therapists), and medical staff to support the holistic development of pupils. Foster a calm, nurturing, and highly structured environment where pupils feel safe, valued, and stimulated. Follow safe moving and handling procedures when supporting students with physical disabilities or using wheelchairs. Monitor student progress and provide clear, timely feedback to teaching staff and other professionals. Promote the social and emotional well-being of students through consistent, respectful, and person-centred support. Requirements Experience supporting pupils with PMLD in an educational or care setting is essential. A calm, patient, and proactive approach to supporting students with high levels of need. Confidence in assisting with personal care, feeding, hoisting, and medical routines. Basic understanding of sensory integration, augmentative communication methods, and therapeutic approaches. Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset when working with multi-disciplinary teams. Relevant training in manual handling, medical protocols, or PEG feeding (desirable but not essential). A genuine passion for supporting children and young people with complex needs in a compassionate and respectful way.
