Job Purpose The Head of SHEQ will be responsible for overseeing SHEQ planning and resource allocation in alignment with strategic objectives, reporting directly to the Managing Director and holding accountability for SHEQ performance across all SES UK business units. This role includes external stakeholder engagement and regulatory leadership, representing the company to bodies such as HSE, SEPA, and other relevant authorities. The postholder will set and drive the strategic SHEQ agenda, embedding a culture of continuous improvement and proactive risk management throughout the organisation. They will lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of robust SHEQ systems—including ISO 9001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 50001—ensuring full compliance with current legislation and standards. Additionally, the role involves designing and delivering a comprehensive SHEQ change programme, managing SHEQ personnel, providing functional leadership across operational teams, and ensuring consistent delivery of SHEQ training. Performance will be measured through key indicators focused on SHEQ outcomes, cultural improvements, and compliance effectiveness Key accountabilities Strategic Leadership & Culture Set the strategic direction for SHEQ across Sureserve Energy Services and its subsidiaries. Initiate and lead a SHEQ change programme to embed a culture of continuous improvement and proactive risk management. Represent and lead SHEQ compliance nationally, including external stakeholder engagement with HSE, SEPA, Environment Agency, and other regulatory bodies. Promote workplace wellbeing initiatives, including mental health first aid. Champion continuous improvement and cultural transformation using techniques such as Behavioural Based Safety. Compliance & Risk Management Act as the responsible person for all SHEQ matters across the business. Ensure rigorous risk assessment and incident management systems are in place and followed. Lead investigations into incidents and near misses, determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions. Oversee enhanced accident/incident reporting and liaise with insurers on personal injury and property damage claims. Maintain compliance with ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, and ISO 50001 standards. Audit & Reporting Conduct regular internal audits and inspections across offices and sites. Prepare and communicate SHEQ board reports and performance metrics to the SMT and Group. Document audit findings, propose corrective actions, and ensure close-out. Maintain accreditations including CHAS, Constructionline, and other professional bodies. Training & Development Oversee the delivery and consistency of SHEQ training across all levels. Monitor the live training matrix and ensure timely renewal of qualifications. Design and deliver coaching sessions and toolbox talks. Ensure safety inductions are carried out effectively. Regulatory Engagement Represent the company in all regulatory and local authority engagements. Support investigations including documentation, interviews, and site meetings. Promote good working relationships with public bodies such as HSE, SEPA, and the Environment Agency. Technical & Operational Support Support operational teams in achieving compliance with technical accreditations (e.g. MCS, PAS2030, PAS20354, GasSafe Register, NICEIC). Develop, implement, and monitor Construction Phase Plans and project-specific risk assessments/method statements. Assist the Health and Safety Advisor in managing SHEQ issues effectively. Essential criteria NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent (Essential) Graduate IOSH status (Essential) Proven experience in a senior SHEQ leadership role Demonstrable experience with ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, and ISO 50001 In-depth knowledge of CDM 2015 and Building Safety Act 2022 Experience working with Principal Contractor, Principal Designer, and Contractor roles under CDM regulations Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to assess situations and implement improvement plans Effective at all levels of the organisation Self-motivated, diligent, and collaborative Proficient in Office365 (Outlook, Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint, HSE Management systems) Desirable Environmental Management Qualifications (e.g. NEBOSH Environmental Certificate, IEMA) Quality Management Qualifications (e.g. IRCA ISO 9001 Lead Auditor) Experience preparing submissions for SHEQ awards (e.g. RoSPA, British Safety Council) Additional Requirements: Disclosure Check; Full UK Driving License.
