The Infrastructure Architect role is wide ranging, supporting the eHealth Dept in many of its priority Programmes and initiatives. From the provision of consultative services to project and business as usual teams, involvement in the development, scoring and implementation of tender documentation as well as leading technical reviews of any programmes or projects which rely on NHSGGC Infrastructure. The role provides in depth analysis and feedback for the breadth of activities that NHSGGC eHealth Directorate undertake. The successful applicant may also play a key part in the delivery of programmes of work as they are implemented.

Key attributes include: -

* The ability to learn concepts and key features of new specialties, from technical to clinical / medical and to be able to view from a high level to identify any opportunities that are being missed, alignment with eHealth and Board Objectives and opportunities to reuse within the estate.
* The ability to consider things from multiple viewpoints. These could be different roles, technology perspectives, financial, legal, in context of internal and external networking, security, and support.
* An understanding and analysis of the economics of contracts / systems / services from vendor, distributor, reseller through to customer.
* Of course, the ability to communicate effectively with all levels within the organisation is a given, this can include verbal and written as well as the confidence to present any information in person.

An understanding of the following technologies is key: -

* Physical & Virtual Hosting
* Public Cloud Hosting
* Applications Architecture
* Databases
* Web Servers
* Telephony Platforms
* Networking – including protocols such as DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP
* Internetworking – including MPLS, Firewalls, Load Balancers
* Cyber Security
* Configuration Management
* Techniques to ensure High Availability
* Data Centre design and operation – including cooling, structure and environment and the power requirements such facilities utilise

A typical week for the successful candidate could include: -

* Evaluate papers for Technical Services Group and Change Advisory Board, preparing comments, questions etc prior to the meeting
* Take part in scoring sessions for a tender for a new system potentially used by thousands of staff
* Evaluate costs for migration of service or services to public cloud, work with Microsoft or other partner to detail this and document in a paper that will be delivered to eHealth Director.
* Provide guidance to a Programme Board about technologies that could be used to provide better resilience for their system/service
* Visit datacentre with colleagues from estates to ensure cooling and power remain fit for purpose
* Provide suggestions to line manager around new developments within the eHealth portfolio that could yield efficiencies, better resilience or cost savings.
* Chair Technology Delivery Group(s)
* Update non-functional technical standards that are used in NHSGGC tender documentation.
* Investigate a recurring problem, owning the resolution until implementation.
* Meet with Applications Architect to discuss new initiatives and processes to ensure that eHealth continue to meet commitments detailed in the Digital Delivery Plan
