Newly Qualified Staff Nurse

37 hours per week (part time opportunities also available), Permanent, Band 5

Are you a final year nursing student qualifying this summer and interested in working in a District General Hospital?

Why work for us?

Patients are at the centre of everything we do in our daily working lives at NHS Borders ensuring they are safe, cared for efficiently, effectively by suitably experienced and qualified staff driving quality at the heart of patient care. We are a dynamic and forward thinking organisation with a wealth of clinical and leadership experience. We aim for an open and honest culture and believe in nurturing future stars in NHS.

Borders General Hospital is a modern and well‑equipped DGH serving the rural Borders area in South East Scotland, approximately 36 miles from Edinburgh. After an absence of almost 50 years, the Borders Railway has now opened, with train services to central Edinburgh running every thirty minutes (journey time 50 minutes approx). Tweedbank Station is a short walk from the Borders General Hospital. Alternatively the hospital offers free staff car parking facilities.

NHS Borders is currently recruiting to a range of posts based within planned care and unscheduled care directorates of the Borders General Hospital in Melrose.

Unscheduled Care

* Emergency Department – diverse clinical presentations and fast‑paced decision‑making.
* General Medical Wards
* Stroke Unit
* Palliative care

Planned Care

* General Surgical Wards, including:
* Orthopaedics – trauma, elective procedures and post‑operative rehabilitation.
* Theatres & Recovery – peri‑operative care (for those interested in a peri‑op career pathway).

Other Opportunities

* High Dependency Unit (HDU) – for those seeking enhanced critical care skills.

All areas subject to vacancies at the time.

Applications are invited from students in their final year of university, newly qualified and experienced staff nurses. We welcome interest from candidates passionate about delivering high‑quality patient care and keen to develop within a supportive learning culture.

When you are completing your application, please state under question 3 your preferences for areas/wards within Acute Services you would like to be considered for.

NHS Borders is holding an open day on Thursday 12th March 2026 from 10am -12 noon in the Tryst, Chaplaincy Centre on the Borders General Hospital Site.

Closing date for applications is 26th March 2026 with interviews being held on Thursday 23rd April 2026.

As from 1st April 2026 the Agenda for Change full‑time working week will be reducing from 37 to 36 hours per week. Part time hours will be reduced pro‑rata. However, there will be a corresponding increase in the hourly rate so that pay will not be affected.

Due to legislative changes from 1 April 2025, this post may require a different level of criminal records check than is currently the case. If the post is assessed as a "regulated role", your appointment will be subject to joining the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. If there is any change to what is currently required, this will be confirmed by either the Hiring Manager or the Recruitment Team. For more details on these changes please visit: Disclosure Scotland Changes.

To work in the United Kingdom, there is a legal requirement for an individual to demonstrate that they have the relevant permission to work in the country. This permission is, without exception, granted by the UK Visa and Immigration Service.

As part of the pre‑employment checks for a preferred candidate, NHS Scotland Boards will check your entitlement to work in the UK. It can be evidenced through a number of routes including specific types of visa as well as EU settled and pre‑settled status. To find out more about these routes of permission, please refer to the GOV.UK website here.

For specific types of post, if you do not have the necessary eligibility to work in the UK, it might be possible (though not guaranteed) to secure sponsorship via a UK Skilled Worker/Health & Care Worker Visa. However, this is only possible if the employer is a licensed Sponsor, and if the post does not fall below the current minimum salary threshold or “going rate”. Further information on these criteria can be found here.

It is ESSENTIAL that you have checked that you either already have an appropriate right to work in the UK or that the post would be eligible to be sponsored BEFORE submitting your application form.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot accept late applications so please ensure your application is submitted early.

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.
