Role description

As an Associate Ecologist, you will join our team of over 50 ecologists, who have more than 30 years of experience undertaking ecological surveys and assessments, as well as the provision of advice on soil, land use, hydrological and sustainable drainage issues, arboriculture, ecosystem service, natural capital assessment, biodiversity strategies and metrics, and cultural heritage. Having undertaken over 2,000 projects across the UK, Europe and beyond, for public and private clients, we are currently engaged on a variety of large and interesting projects including Urban and Greenfield Residential Development, Highway and Rail Schemes, Power Stations, Electrical and Gas Infrastructure, and more. Your role will involve protected species, pollution, surface water and materials management, air quality or noise in some of the world’s busiest and most beautiful locations.


Role accountabilities

* Lead projects, particularly budgets and cash flow, attend meetings, support the Team Leader and manage the ecological aspects of client relationships to exceed expectations.
* Take a leadership role on projects and within the team, providing direction, technical advice, and leading by example.
* Manage and/or produce Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), impact assessments, biodiversity strategies and other documents.
* Undertake ecological surveys, oversee the analysis of field survey results.
* Provide advice on ecological issues within own area of expertise as well as a broad range of issues.
* Compile licence applications, including developing mitigation and monitoring strategies.
* Undertake/supervise mitigation and monitoring of licensed work and liaise with statutory authorities.
* Undertake performance management of assigned team members and provide training at staff meetings and to smaller groups.
* Design research projects and contribute to development of best practice in training and survey standards.


Qualifications & Experience

* Excellent commercial and project management skills for a range of project sizes.
* Detailed knowledge of ecological principles, biodiversity metrics, relevant environmental and ecological impact assessment (EcIA) legislation, policy and guidance.
* In‑depth knowledge of particular plant or animal groups and appropriate field survey skills.
* Proven track record in writing and delivering Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs) and Ecology Chapters for Environmental Statements consented.
* Proven track record in writing project and/or plan‑level Habitat Regulation Assessments (HRAs).
* Proven experience of bid production for a range of projects and client interaction.
* Experience leading a team.
* Hold survey and/or mitigation/conservation licences.
* Lead in the design and compliance of biosecurity and health and safety protocols.
* Hold a relevant degree, ideally with further education qualification.
* Chartered Environmentalist/Ecologist (or approaching Chartered Ecologist).
* Full member of CIEEM.
* Ability to travel when necessary.
