The Head of Nursing is a key member of the Divisional Leadership team responsible for leading, inspiring, and developing the Nursing, Midwifery, and Allied Health Professionals (AHP) workforce within the Division and across the Trust. The role focuses on delivering high-quality, patient-centered clinical care that meets patient needs through highly specialist knowledge.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinically accountable for the clinical services within the Division.
2. Contribute to the development and implementation of Divisional and Trust strategies, with a focus on quality improvement and maintaining high clinical standards in line with statutory, regulatory, and best practice guidelines.
3. Motivate and empower the Nursing, Midwifery, and AHP workforce, working collaboratively with the Senior Nursing Leadership team.
4. Manage budgets and resources effectively.
5. Manage and develop all Nursing, HV, and AHP staff within the Division, including line management responsibilities for Matrons and Senior Nurses, overseeing appraisals, recruitment, sickness, and disciplinary processes.
6. Ensure effective review, monitoring, and reporting systems are in place to meet workforce safeguards and policy requirements.
7. Oversee operational performance, including patient care quality, safety, governance, and workforce metrics.
8. Maintain divisional financial objectives and budgetary control, prioritizing patient needs.
9. Implement quality improvement initiatives aligned with the Nursing Quality Framework and governance mechanisms to ensure Ward-to-Board assurance.
10. Participate in clinical risk management and quality governance alongside Directorate teams.
11. Align professional development activities with the Trust’s strategic goals.
12. Manage Nursing resource deployment, including pay spend, bank, and agency costs.
13. Participate in the Director on-call rota.
