About the Role
The Clinical Coder will produce and maintain an efficient, high‑quality coding service to support data quality, medical audit, and accurate allocation of Healthcare Resource Groups (HRGs) for costing and analysis. The role requires ensuring all coded clinical data meets national and international classification rules and conventions through regular audits and maintaining accuracy within national standards and the Patient Administration System (PAS). The position allows independent working on routine coding issues, while engendering professional development and compliance with the Trust’s policies.
Responsibilities
* Produce accurate diagnostic and procedural coding for all patient discharges within agreed timeframes.
* Participate in audits to verify compliance with national standards and update coding practices accordingly.
* Maintain comprehensive, accurate coded data directly influencing finance and funding for the Trust.
* Work independently on routine coding issues, keeping abreast of the latest developments and consulting senior team members when needed.
* Interpret histology and radiology reports to ensure coding completeness.
* Support and mentor junior staff on coding and coding policies.
* Provide cover for colleagues during holidays or sickness to maintain continuity of coding and deadlines.
* Communicate effectively with clinicians, nursing staff and other professionals regarding routine coding issues.
* Attend relevant training and workshops; travel off‑site as required.
* Achieve National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) within 3–4 years of successful completion of the Clinical Coding Standards Course.
* Undertake any additional duties directed by the coding manager or senior team.
Qualifications & Experience
* GCSE or equivalent in English.
* Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) status or willingness and ability to obtain the ACC qualification.
* Desirable: GCSE equivalent in Biology, Human Sciences or a related subject.
* Strong knowledge of medical terminology and coding conventions.
* Proven ability to manage workload, prioritise tasks, and meet challenging deadlines.
* Excellent communication skills and a methodical, detail‑oriented approach to work.
* Self‑motivated with the capacity to work autonomously and as part of a team.
* Good command of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
* Willingness to travel between sites and maintain confidentiality and data protection standards.
Additional Requirements
* Successful completion of a DBS check (the Trust will conduct the check).
* Knowledge of, and adherence to, trust policies on safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
* Effective use of the Trust’s electronic systems, particularly the Patient Administration System (PAS).
* Commitment to continuous professional development and training as required.
