1) Exercise of general professional duties
A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:
* (a) if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
* (b) if employed by a board on terms under which he/she is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school where he/she may be required to work.
2) Exercise of particular duties
(a) A teacher employed as a teacher (other than a principal) shall perform, in accordance with any reasonable directions from the principal, such duties as may be assigned.
(b) A teacher to whom paragraph 1(b) applies shall perform, in accordance with directions from the board or the principal of any school where they may work, such duties as may be assigned.
3. Teaching Responsibilities
* Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
* Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;
* Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils' development, progress, and attainment.
4. General Responsibilities
* Promoting the progress and well-being of pupils;
* Providing advice and guidance on educational, social, and career matters;
* Making records and reports on pupils' personal and social needs;
* Communicating with parents and external bodies;
* Participating in relevant meetings.
5. Assessment and Reporting
Contributing to assessments, reports, and references for pupils, ensuring confidentiality where appropriate.
6. Staff Development
* Participating in staff development and performance review schemes;
* Reviewing and developing teaching methods and programmes;
* Advising on curriculum development and pastoral arrangements.
7. Discipline, Health & Safety
* Maintaining discipline and safeguarding pupils' health and safety;
* Participating in school meetings related to curriculum and administration.
8. Public Examinations
Preparing pupils for examinations, assessing, recording, and supervising during exams.
9. Management Activities
* Contributing to the appointment and development of staff;
* Managing or coordinating staff work;
* Participating in curriculum, organisation, and pastoral management;
* Handling administrative tasks, equipment, and materials management;
* Attending assemblies and supervising pupils outside classroom hours.
10. Working Hours
* Availability for 195 days per year, with a maximum of 190 days involving classroom teaching;
* Perform duties as specified by the principal, including travel and preparation time;
* Teaching hours limited to 25 hours per week in primary and special schools, 23.5 in secondary schools;
* Breaks of at least 30 minutes are mandatory, with specific times for nursery staff.
11. Cover Responsibilities
Supervising pupils during teacher absences, with specific provisions based on school size and teacher role.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Section 1 - Essential Criteria
* Hold a recognized teaching qualification for grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
* Minimum 2 years’ teaching experience in Key Stage 2 with positive outcomes.
* Experience using diverse classroom strategies and digital media to support learning.
* Registered with GTCNI before starting.
Section 2 - Additional Essential Criteria
* Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding, SEND Code of Practice, assessment methods, and IT systems.
* Effective teaching, classroom management, teamwork, and communication skills.
* Evidence of reflecting school values and ethos.
Section 3 - Desirable Criteria
* Experience teaching in P5, working in job share arrangements, or assisting with curriculum or extracurricular activities.
