About The Service

The Education and Lifelong Learning Directorate provides the strategic, professional and operational support to enable the Council to fulfil its responsibilities for early years education, statutory age education, education in school sixth forms and a youth service.

There are 127 schools in Cardiff consisting of 3 nursery schools, 98 Primary Schools, 18 Secondary Schools, 7 Special Schools & 1 Pupil Referral Unit.

The work of the Directorate is organised into six service areas: Partnerships & Performance, Inclusion Services, Targeted Services, Key Groups, Services to Schools, and School Organisation and Access and Planning.

Each of these supports the overall purpose of improving the achievement of learners. The Directorate also commissions the Central South Consortium to provide School Improvement Services to all of its schools.

About the job

An exciting opportunity to oversee the Strategic development of the Cardiff Virtual School for Looked After Children and the day to day management of the education of Cardiff’s Looked after Children.

The role will focus on working with schools to raise the achievement and attainment of Looked after Children and ensure that their well- being needs are supported. Close working with Children’s Services and other agencies will be an essential part of the role.

Required for September 2026.

What We Are Looking For From You

The ability to build good, positive working relationships with a range of stakeholders will be essential.

There will be line management responsibility for a small team and a requirement to build further the understanding of corporate parenting responsibility within the whole education directorate.

A detailed role profile and person specification is attached which includes essential skills and experience required for this post.

Additional information

Leadership Range: L20 - L27 (£84,100 - £99,824 per annum)
