Volunteer opportunity. Flexible hours between Monday to Friday, 8.30am and 2.30pm.
The Day Centre is at the heart of the homeless community in Southampton. We provide a safe space for up to 70 adults each day, offering access to food, clothes, showers, and laundry. The service also includes on-site healthcare and accommodation for up to 10 clients.
Our goal is to support clients in maintaining safety and health, meeting immediate needs, and helping them access support and long-term housing.
We have a close-knit, collaborative team that supports each other and our clients. If you’re looking for a fast-paced, impactful role, this is for you!
You will support clients experiencing homelessness or unstable housing by providing hot, nutritious meals twice daily.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
* Create a welcoming environment for rough sleepers and those facing homelessness
* Understand food hygiene and relevant legislation
* Assist kitchen staff in preparing healthy meals
* Respond appropriately to clients' needs and cultural differences
* Follow safeguarding responsibilities and report concerns promptly
* Keep the kitchen and canteen clean and tidy
* Manage donations effectively
* Report health and safety issues and repairs
* Handle difficult situations with clients empathetically
* Practice non-discriminative, person-centred support
* Remain resilient in high-emotion situations
* Recognize physiological needs
* Perform other duties in the interest of the organization and clients
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
Previous sector experience is not essential; a genuine passion for working with vulnerable people in homelessness is key. Our values should align with your ethics, and you should be committed to making a positive difference.
