We are looking for an experienced risk professional to lead the implementation of our Risk Management Framework and drive a programme of work that strengthens our risk culture across the Environment Agency.
Responsibilities
* Champion and maintain the Risk Management Framework, ensuring alignment with HM Treasury’s Orange Book and organisational needs.
* Lead rollout of consistent risk management processes organisation-wide.
* Deliver an annual programme of activities to embed good risk practices and foster a proactive risk culture.
* Provide senior leaders with clear, insightful reporting to support strategic decision‑making.
* Build trusted relationships across teams, offering expert advice and constructive challenge.
* Collaborate with functions such as health & safety and programme management to integrate risk management into all activities.
* Coach and support team members to help them grow and deliver with confidence.
* Be available to respond to incidents and provide business continuity support during an incident (additional payment may be offered).
Qualifications
* Extensive experience as a technical risk leader, with deep understanding of risk management, governance and assurance.
* Comprehensive knowledge of the Orange Book and risk management principles.
* Proven track record of implementing and embedding risk management initiatives across multiple teams.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience engaging senior leaders on risk matters.
* Ability to build strong, trusted relationships across all levels while challenging firmly and constructively.
* Experience working in a complex, fast‑paced environment, adapting quickly to changing circumstances and managing competing priorities.
* Optional: Risk management qualification or professional membership (e.g. IRM CERT).
* Understanding of risk‑based functions such as project/programme management and health & safety.
About the role
The role is based at any Environment Agency office and is fully hybrid. The successful candidate may be required to travel for national meetings and overnight stays. Flexible working, including job share, is supported. Although this technical leadership role may have line management responsibilities in the future, it is primarily internal facing, with opportunities to network with other government departments.
