Offer description

The Opportunity Birmingham is a dynamic, fast-growing super-diverse city with a rich cultural and literary history, from its status as the industrial heart of the Midlands to its vibrant contemporary arts scene. We are seeking an intellectually ambitious English Teacher to join a progressive, high-performing Church of England secondary academy. In this role, you will inspire students to master the power of language and the depth of literature—from the classic canon to contemporary global voices—utilizing Birmingham’s rich heritage as a living classroom to foster a generation of articulate and critical thinkers. The Department & Literary Culture You will join a supportive and collaborative English faculty where the subject is celebrated as a cornerstone of the school’s academic and spiritual life. The department fosters an environment of rigorous textual analysis, sophisticated debate, and creative expression, encouraging students to explore the moral, ethical, and cultural themes within literature. As a forward-thinking faith setting, we prioritise an inclusive curriculum that balances technical grammatical precision with a deep, empathetic exploration of diverse narratives. We maintain active links with regional cultural institutions, such as the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and local library networks, providing students with unique opportunities for workshops, spoken word events, and live performance experiences. Core Responsibilities Exemplary Instruction: Delivering high-challenge English Language and Literature lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE), ensuring all students make exceptional academic progress. Textual Inquiry: Guiding students through the interrogation of complex texts, fostering the ability to identify nuanced themes, structural choices, and the historical contexts of diverse authors. Written Eloquence: Systematically developing students' ability to write with clarity, flair, and purpose, whether for academic analysis, persuasive rhetoric, or creative storytelling. Data-Driven Progress: Utilising the academy’s robust assessment framework to provide targeted, actionable feedback, ensuring students are perfectly prepared for terminal examinations. Oracy Leadership: Supporting extra-curricular initiatives, such as debating societies, creative writing groups, or school publications, to promote a vibrant culture of literacy across the academy. The Successful Candidate We are looking for a subject authority who believes that the study of English is essential for developing informed, articulate, and empathetic citizens. Requirements include: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a strong honours degree in English Literature, English Language, or a closely related discipline. Proven Track Record: Evidence of delivering high-quality learning outcomes at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, with a deep understanding of exam board specification requirements. Pedagogical Flair: The ability to bring a wide range of texts to life, making the microscopic details of language and the macroscopic themes of literature accessible to all learners. Reflective Practice: A dedicated professional committed to continuous development, eager to collaborate on high-quality resources and innovative curriculum design. Why Join Us? The opportunity to work in a school with a strong community ethos, where student behaviour is exemplary and staff well-being is genuinely valued. Unrivalled professional development opportunities, including clear pathways into middle leadership and specialized training in advanced literacy pedagogy. The chance to live and work in Birmingham—a vibrant city offering a lower cost of living, world-class food and shopping, extensive green spaces, and exceptional transport links across the country. A supportive, collaborative professional community that values innovation, intellectual ambition, and the future success of every student.
