Principal Clinical Scientist (Biochemistry)

We welcome applications for a band 8A Principal Clinical Scientist post in the Department of Clinical Biochemistry within the East & South East London Pathology Partnership. You will join an experienced team of four Consultants and eight Clinical Scientists. The position is a fixed‑term, full‑time appointment for one year, providing maternity leave cover, with part‑time options available upon discussion.
The laboratory is one of the largest in the UK, offering specialist services including LC‑MS/MS, HPLC, atomic absorption, proteins and POCT support across the partnership. It collaborates closely with Barts Health’s cardiovascular, cancer, children’s, endocrine, nutrition, ICU teams and other units, providing ample research and clinical liaison opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
* Participate in the Duty Biochemist rota, providing interpretation of results and advice on investigations to medical staff and other service users.
* Validate and implement new methods and assays, overseeing their introduction into routine clinical use.
* Undertake and publish research.
* Engage in quality improvement projects.
* Supervise STP trainees.
Qualifications and Experience
You must be state registered with the Health Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist (Clinical Biochemistry) and hold part 1 of the FRCPath by examination, or equivalent. Candidates who are HCPC registered as a Clinical Scientist but have not yet attained the part 1 FRCPath examination will be considered under the AfC annex 21 and supported to continue their training.
About the East & South East London Pathology Partnership
The Partnership is an arms‑length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. It hosts a single laboratory network, unified by a single LIMS and QMS, with a main hub at the Royal London Hospital and essential service laboratories at six other sites.
