We are pleased to be recruiting for an Associate Professor in Therapeutic Radiography to contribute to our established radiotherapy research team working across UCL and UCLH.
UCL Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering is one of the UK's longest-established medical physics departments, with a history dating back to 1896 when the first X-ray device was introduced at the nearby Middlesex Hospital. As a global leader in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering research, we work closely with clinicians and scientists across major hospitals to develop cutting-edge technologies for diagnosing, treating and managing medical conditions.
Our research spans medical imaging, cancer diagnosis and therapies, robotics and AI, implanted devices and computing. We have developed a wide range of clinical applications, including computer-assisted navigation, diagnosis and intervention, as well as tools that support minimally invasive surgery. Our work includes unique AI systems capable of identifying sight‑threatening eye diseases and predicting wider health concerns, as well as research in Proton Beam Therapy focused on optimising radiation delivery to improve efficacy and reduce side effects.
University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) is one of the most complex NHS trusts in the UK, providing academically‑led acute and specialist services to local, national and international patients. Radiotherapy services are delivered across two departments: the photon department at University College Hospital and the national Proton Beam Therapy Centre in the Grafton Way Building. Together, they treat around 2,850 patients per year and are supported by approximately 90 radiographers and other staff.
We deliver radiotherapy for a broad spectrum of cancers, including specialist paediatric, adolescent, brachytherapy, isotope, total body irradiation, sarcoma, neurological and head and neck services. The department also provides SABR and serves as the main southern centre for cranial SRS, with strong academic links to nuclear medicine and oncology.
About the role
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an Associate Professor in Therapeutic Radiography to work within our established radiotherapy research team based across both UCL and UCLH. The team is active in clinical trials and in technical and biological innovation across both discovery and translational research, and works closely with UCL's cross‑disciplinary cancer research network of more than 1,000 principal investigators. Our work is supported by significant funding from CRUK, NIHR, UKRI and other cancer charities.
The successful candidate will develop an internationally leading research programme and lead our doctoral programme in Therapeutic Radiography, while shaping new educational initiatives in the field. The postholder will provide a key link between UCL's Department of Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering and UCLH Radiotherapy and Proton Beam Therapy Departments, supporting multidisciplinary research and innovation. They will be an experienced therapeutic radiographer, offering professional research leadership and supporting wider AHP research capability. The postholder will be employed by UCL with an honorary UCLH contract and based at UCLH at least two days per week. A 12‑month probation applies.
About you
We would be delighted to receive applications from experienced Therapeutic Radiographers who bring strong academic foundations and a proven commitment to advancing the field. You will hold a PhD or have equivalent research experience, alongside undergraduate or Master's-level qualifications in radiography, and you will already be HCPC‑registered or eligible for registration on appointment.
Your experience will demonstrate clear research leadership: delivering impactful studies, publishing in leading international journals, presenting at major conferences, and securing competitive research funding as a principal or co‑investigator. You will also have a strong record of teaching and supervision at undergraduate or Master's level, paired with a genuine commitment to the pastoral support and development of students and early‑career colleagues.
You will be confident working with confidential and patient data, an excellent communicator, and someone who manages your own workload effectively while showing initiative and adaptability.
