Role Purpose
The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for producing mechanical designs, 3D models, drawings, BOMs, and manufacturing information for low-voltage switchgear projects.
The role will support live project delivery by developing accurate, manufacturable designs in line with client requirements, internal standards, manufacturing capability, and project deadlines. The Mechanical Design Engineer will work closely with the Mechanical Design Manager, Electrical Design, Project Management, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and other departments to ensure design information is complete, accurate, and suitable for release to the shop floor.
This role is required to provide additional design capacity within the Mechanical Design team and to support planned progression within the department.
About The Role
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design and Project Delivery
* Create and update 3D models using Autodesk Inventor.
* Design mechanical arrangements for low-voltage switchgear assemblies.
* Produce and maintain manufacturing drawings, BOMs, and supporting release information.
* Design sheet metal components, frames, plinths, doors, covers, gland plates, segregation, support brackets, busbar supports, and related mechanical parts.
* Support the design of copperwork arrangements, cable access, ventilation, breaker mounting arrangements, and internal panel layouts.
* Ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, repeatable, and suitable for assembly.
* Work to project deadlines and communicate progress, issues, and risks clearly.
Design Accuracy and Release Control
* Ensure models, drawings, BOMs, and release information are accurate and aligned.
* Check designs against general arrangement drawings, single-line diagrams, client specifications, and internal standards.
* Support internal design reviews before release to manufacturing.
* Update design information following client changes, manufacturing feedback, or internal review comments.
* Follow Vault, revision control, and release procedures.
* Help reduce errors caused by outdated drawings, incorrect BOMs, or incomplete manufacturing information.
Manufacturing and Cross-Department Support
* Support Manufacturing with design-related queries during build.
* Assist with resolving fit-up issues, missing information, part clashes, and drawing/BOM queries.
* Work with Purchasing and Stores to clarify component requirements where needed.
* Communicate design changes clearly to relevant departments.
* Support Project Management with technical information, design progress updates, and issue resolution.
* Work with Electrical Design to ensure mechanical and electrical arrangements are aligned.
Standards and Continuous Improvement
* Contribute to standardisation of mechanical parts, assemblies, drawings, and design methods.
* Identify opportunities to improve manufacturability, assembly efficiency, quality, and repeatability.
* Feed lessons learned from live projects back into future designs.
* Support development of library components, templates, checklists, and design guides.
* Assist with prototypes, product improvements, and development work where required.
Skills and Experience Required
Essential
* Experience in mechanical design within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
* Good working knowledge of 3D CAD, preferably Autodesk Inventor.
* Ability to create and understand manufacturing drawings.
* Knowledge of sheet metal design, fabrication, punching, folding, and assembly methods.
* Good attention to detail.
* Strong problem-solving ability.
* Ability to manage multiple tasks and project priorities.
* Good communication skills.
* Ability to work as part of a team and take ownership of assigned work.
Desirable
* Experience with Autodesk Vault or similar PDM system.
* Experience in low-voltage switchgear, electrical enclosures, control panels, machinery, or similar products.
* Knowledge of copperwork, busbar systems, breaker mounting, panel construction, ventilation, and segregation.
* Experience producing BOMs, DXFs, and manufacturing release packs.
* Understanding of design for manufacture and assembly.
* Experience working with electrical drawings, general arrangement drawings, or client specifications.
