Equality & Diversity Statement

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

Position Overview

University Hospital Crosshouse is a large district general hospital based in Ayrshire, central Scotland. Crosshouse is situated 35 minutes south of Glasgow. Funding from Additional Cost of Teaching money has provided this opportunity to continue our commitment to teaching of undergraduate medical students. We wish to appoint 1 Clinical Teaching Fellow within the department of general surgery at University Hospital Crosshouse. The posts will commence on 6th August 2025.

Key Responsibilities

The Clinical Teaching Fellow will focus on the organisation, development and provision of teaching to undergraduate medical students from Glasgow University. The successful candidate will spend approximately 50:50 teaching to service split as allowed by the current funding process.

The balance of time will be in clinical practice with protected time for personal development (audit, research and/or completion of certificate course in medical education). This post will contribute to the out‑of‑hours rota in general surgery, which allows the posts to attract a 40% out‑of‑hours supplement. It is not expected that on‑call will interfere significantly with day‑time teaching, clinical or research activities.

Funding & Development Opportunities

The Board will provide significant funding towards a PG Certificate in Medical Education with our partner university. It is envisaged that this will cover most, if not all, of the course fee. The contribution will be clarified by the time of interview.

Funding towards a medical education qualification (for example, a post‑graduate certificate in medical education) will be made available. Alternatively successful candidates may opt to undertake their own portfolio of development aligned to their personal needs and career aspirations. Where an appointee decides not to enrol in the certificate course in medical education, up to £1,250 will be made available to support funding of personal development activities, which must be agreed with the Clinical Supervisor/Assistant Director of Medical Education.

For those candidates NOT wishing to undertake a PG cert funding of up to £1250 will be made available to support professional development such as attendances at course.

Eligibility & Requirements

This post is suited to trainees who have satisfactorily completed foundation training or can demonstrate equivalent competencies, and wish to develop skills in medical education or clinical research. The posts would also be highly suited to any candidate who has completed core surgical training and wishes to develop sub‑specialty experience and improve their curriculum vitae prior to specialty training application.

You will be fully registered with the GMC with a current Licence to Practice, and must have completed foundation or equivalent training. 12 Months paid NHS Experience is an essential Criterion for this post. Evidence of an interest in, and an aptitude for teaching would be advantageous.

Please note that these posts do not carry educational approval with the Dean.
