Trainee Health Physicist location: RG7 4PR, between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking. Working pattern: AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight. Flexible working requests may be considered, e.g. term time contract or part time. Hybrid working is available on an informal, non-contractual basis, typically 3 days onsite per week.

Role and Team
AWE is recruiting for a Trainee Health Physicist for the Radiation Protection and Dosimetry Group. The Radiation Protection and Dosimetry Group is part of the Science function at AWE and provides legal and technical advice to a range of internal and external customers regarding health and safety in relation to working with radioactive materials and other sources of ionising radiation. Our work covers a wide range of applications and customers, from nuclear manufacturing facilities to forensic laboratories, new build facilities to decommissioning, and security operations.
Responsibilities
* Engage in a two-year health physicist training scheme that combines training modules with placements around the business to develop world-class professionals.
* Apply practical, scientific and technical knowledge to learn how to be a radiation protection professional in a multi-disciplinary environment with both office-based and practical elements.
* Provide support in health physics, dosimetry, environment, radioactive waste management, health and safety (ESH), or related fields, and develop capability to advise on radiation protection matters.
* Work calmly and constructively in priority-changing environments and manage own workload with initiative and enthusiasm, meeting tight deadlines.
* Pursue professional accreditation as a Radiation Protection Adviser and Chartered status with the Radiation Protection Council after completing the training scheme.
Qualifications and Development
* Experience: operational experience in health physics, dosimetry, environment, radioactive waste management, health and safety (ESH) or related fields, or a degree in science, technology or engineering, with the ability to apply knowledge to radiation protection.
* Strong communication skills to interact with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
