Job Summary
We are looking to appoint two Band 5 Occupational Therapists into our inpatient Medical and Surgical OT team at Sunderland Royal Hospital on a fixed‑term basis (until 31.03.26) to cover winter pressures. The team is based in a large, busy, friendly department where you will have opportunities to develop clinical skills and knowledge with a varied patient group, covering a wide range of conditions to maximise independence and safety in preparation for discharge.
Responsibilities
* Hold own caseload of patients and work with a senior OT for support with straight‑forward and more complex cases.
* Assess and plan interventions for acute physical hospital and community settings, including home assessments.
* Prioritise and manage time effectively as part of the multidisciplinary team.
* Provide therapy assessment, treatment and advice to a caseload across a range of conditions.
* Support department‑wide sharing of skills and knowledge, and contribute to CPD activities.
* Meet travel requirements, including driving department vehicles for community visits.
Qualifications & Experience
* Recognised Degree in Occupational Therapy (completed or pending for new graduates).
* HCPC registration (applicant pending for new graduates).
* Minimum of one year placement experience in an acute physical hospital setting.
* Experience of acute physical OT hospital discharge assessment and planning.
* Desirable: Membership of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT).
Physical Skills
* Engage in physical activity throughout the day; undertake moving and handling assessments.
* Sit at a workstation to complete administrative tasks.
* Work in restricted spaces that may require bending or kneeling.
* Lift and carry equipment, e.g., toilet or bathing equipment for assessments.
* Drive department vehicles or meet travel requirements for community visits.
Skills & Knowledge
* Strong verbal and written communication skills, including report writing.
* Analytical and judgmental skills; ability to prioritise workload.
* Basic IT skills and presentational skills.
* Knowledge of South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust culture and related legislation.
* Basic knowledge of adaptive aids and equipment for functional independence.
* Knowledge of community and local authority services in the region.
Contract Details
