HCA will be expected to perform renal-specific competencies related to haemodialysis skills. You will be trained in these abilities. Some renal specialised knowledge is required to provide excellent care to haemodialysis patients. The HCA haemodialysis skills clinical competencies must be fulfilled. Following training, you will perform these renal-specific skills as part of the Acute Dialysis Team or in the Chronic Haemodialysis Units.
* Preparation of equipment for haemodialysis.
* Pre & post HD observations - blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation, glucose monitoring.
* Pre & post HD weighing of patients, including calculation of wheelchair weight.
* Assisting patients with manual handling - transfer using hoist/Banana board or SARA Steady.
* Using therapy monitor.
* Lining & priming of HD machines.
* Disconnecting patients from HD (patients with fistula as vascular access).
* Cleaning/disinfecting HD machines.
* Segregation & disposal of waste.
* HD materials stocking levels and ordering.
* Using online Transport booking system (SCAS).
* Using renal IT system - CV5.
* Escalating concerns timely and appropriately to the registered nurse.
