Talking Therapies Cognitive Behavioural Therapist

Job responsibilities


CLINICAL

* Assess patient suitability for CBT interventions in line with NICE guidance in a stepped care model.
* Provide consultations with Talking Therapies staff on suitability and feed back to stakeholders to support the patient to access the right intervention.
* Complete onward referral to other services where appropriate.
* Assess and manage risk collaboratively with the patient and adhere to the Talking Therapies risk protocol.
* Formulate, implement and evaluate therapy programmes for patients.
* Complete all mandated session‑by‑session outcome measures.
* Work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, using an interpreter when necessary, and demonstrate a commitment to equal opportunities and cultural competence.
* Use highly developed communication skills to understand and address personal and sensitive difficulties.
* Exercise professional responsibility for assessment and treatment in line with the service and the National Talking Therapies manual.
* Educate and involve family members and others in treatment as appropriate, conveying CBT in easily understood language.
* Adhere to an agreed job plan relating to the number of patient contacts and clinical sessions to minimise waiting times and deliver timely care.
* Keep coherent records of all clinical activity and complete all service data‑collection requirements.
* Work closely with team members to maintain a stepped care approach.
* Integrate work‑and‑employment issues into the overall therapy process.
* Liaise with other health and social care staff to provide appropriate care for patients.
* Demonstrate clinical leadership appropriate to banding where required.


TRAINING AND SUPERVISION

* Contribute to the development, teaching and training of other mental health professionals and staff.
* Attend clinical supervision regularly as agreed with the Manager and as outlined in the National Talking Therapies manual.
* Undertake Clinical Supervisors training and provide clinical supervision to other CBT therapists.
* Ensure all mandatory training and CPD is up to date in line with service protocol.


PROFESSIONAL

* Follow Trust and Sheffield Talking Therapies policies, procedures, Best Practice Guidance and SOPS (Standard Operating Procedures).
* Keep records in line with Standard Operating Procedures, including contemporaneous notes, risk checks and discharge summaries.
* Commit to improving individual recovery rates using data, supervision and CPD.
* Maintain standards of practice in line with regulatory bodies such as BABCP and NHS guidelines.
* Ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
* Stay up to date with advances in CBT and other psychological therapies.
* Identify, discuss and review professional objectives with line manager and senior therapists.
* Attend and prepare for clinical/managerial supervision regularly.
* Participate in performance reviews and respond to agreed objectives that support service goals.
* Keep CPD records up to date and maintain a personal development plan.
* Contribute to service improvement by highlighting issues and implementing changes.


ADVISORY / LIAISON

* Provide advisory services on matters related to CBT practice and delivery.
* Promote and maintain positive relationships with Primary Care and Secondary Care staff to coordinate effective psychological therapies services.


GENERAL

* Contribute to best practice development within the service.
* Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies, and procedures related to mental health and primary care services.
* Adhere to health and safety responsibilities for self, colleagues and the public.
* Ensure confidential information is processed in line with the Data Protection Act and security policies.
* Avoid abuse of official position for personal gain or private business during official duties.
* Be comfortable using computer technology, basic keyboard skills, email and videoconferencing as a treatment option.


Person Specification


Knowledge & Skills

* Skilled in the psychological assessment, intervention and management of common mental health problems such as depression and a wide range of anxiety disorders.
* Deliver agreed job plan of 20 clinical hours per week pro‑rata and meet national recovery rate targets.
* Use session‑by‑session outcome measures to monitor practice.
* Possess well‑developed oral and written communication skills for complex, sensitive information.
* Provide consultation to professional and non‑professional groups.
* Knowledge of current evidence‑based CBT models for common mental health problems.
* Understand the need to use evidence‑based therapies and how they relate to this post.
* Knowledge of child protection issues and relevant legislation.
* Full range of clinical competences relevant to this post.
* Knowledge of relevant legislation.


Training & Qualifications

* Recognised qualification as a High Intensity Talking Therapies CBT therapist.
* BABCP Accreditation or Provisional Accreditation for CBT, or post‑graduate/doctoral training in clinical psychology accredited by the HCPC and/or BPS.
* Registration as a Clinical Psychologist with the HCPC.
* Other professional body accreditation maintained throughout employment.
* Completion of Talking Therapies Long‑Term Conditions Training.
* Additional master’s level or postgraduate qualification or training.
* Talking Therapies Supervision training qualification.


Experience

* Demonstrable experience working with people experiencing depression and anxiety, preferably in a Talking Therapies or primary care setting.
* Experience using routine outcome measures and monitoring procedures.
* Ability to meet agreed service targets and standards (access, waiting times, recovery).
* Ability to manage own caseload and time effectively.
* Skilled in assessment and management of clinical risk within scope of practice.
* Develop therapeutic relationships with clients.
* High‑level understanding of anxiety and depression presentations in primary care.
* Ability to assess complex psychological difficulties and advise appropriate onward management.
* Experience across diverse service user groups and clinical severities.
* Effective multidisciplinary teamwork experience.
* Demonstrated clinical leadership appropriate to banding.
* Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.
* Experience applying psychological therapy across cultural contexts.
* Experience working with patients with physical health conditions.
* Experience in a service with target‑based outcome measures.


Other

* Work minimum 22.5 hours per week, including Thursday afternoon non‑clinical time for meetings, forums and CPD.
* Flexible with appointment times to meet patient need, offering early, late, evening or Saturday sessions as required.
* Work effectively with GP practice teams and broader service teams.
* High enthusiasm, motivation and professional resilience.
* Advanced communication skills and team collaboration.
* Use clinical supervision and personal development positively and effectively.
* Ability to work under pressure and maintain concentration.
* Judgement in complex clinical situations.
* Experience within multicultural frameworks.
