Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The closing date is 22 June 2026

Our dedicated Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department are looking for the perfect candidate to join us as a Consultant.

In your role you will ensure the continued delivery of high‑quality Obstetric and Gynaecological care to patients within the Trust and community and contribute to the further development of the service. You may be required to complement existing general Gynaecology and Obstetrics services, take on extra clinics or theatres, and join the on‑call team on a rota basis.

The appointed consultant will contribute to the ongoing service improvement programme, including:

* Our Maternity Culture Transformation programme
* Implementing evidence‑based new ways of working when necessary


Main duties of the job

* Working collaboratively with nursing and midwifery colleagues, leading service developments across all O&G services, in line with the Better Births Review and embedding learning from reports such as Kirkup and Ockenden.
* Providing an on‑call commitment for Central Delivery Suite and emergency Gynaecology cover as 1:10 on call; contactable and able to reach the hospital within 30 minutes when needed.
* Ensuring services are delivered effectively and within budget regarding the Trust’s waiting‑times standards.
* Liaising closely with other departments and outside agencies to contribute to the objectives of our services.


Person specification


Qualifications / training and professional development

* Medical degree with Full GMC Registration and licence to practice
* MRCOG and appropriate specialist registration
* Relevant CCT or CESR and be on specialist register (confirmed by GMC by date of AAC) within 6 months of CCT
* SITM/ATSM in maternal medicine, pregnancy care or equivalent experience
* MD, PhD or evidence of equivalent training and experience
* SITM/ATSM in Acute gynaecology & early pregnancy, hysteroscopy, benign gynaecology surgery or equivalent experience


Experience

* Clinical training and experience in General Obstetrics and Gynaecology to the standard required for a UK CCST
* Ability to take responsibility and offer expert clinical opinion in a range of emergency problems within the specialty
* A wide range of clinical skills and practice within the specialty
* Statement regarding appropriate training and experience including that relating to a special interest
* Registration in the RCOG CPD programme


Skills, abilities & knowledge

* Practises with the professional values and behaviours expected of all doctors as set out in GMC Good Medical Practice and the Generic Professional Capabilities Framework (or equivalent for dentists)
* Demonstrates the underpinning subject‑specific competencies, i.e., knowledge, skills and behaviours relevant to the role setting and scope
* Clinically evaluates and manages a patient, formulating a prioritised differential diagnosis, initiating an appropriate management plan and reviewing and adjusting this depending on the outcomes of treatment
* Manages the difficulties of dealing with complexity and uncertainty in the care of patients; employing expertise and clinical decision‑making skills of a senior and independent/autonomous practitioner
* Communicates effectively and is able to share decision‑making with patients, relatives and carers; treats patients as individuals, promoting a person‑centred approach to their care, including self‑management
* Demonstrates understanding of a range of leadership principles, approaches and techniques so can adapt leadership behaviours to improve engagement and outcomes – appreciates own leadership style and its impact on others
