ABP is the UK’s leading ports operator, supporting global trade, local economies, and vital supply chains. We are now seeking a Lock Controller to join our Marine Services team in Newport, playing a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of vessels within the port.
About the Role
As a Lock Controller, you will be at the heart of marine operations, ensuring that vessels transit safely through the Newport dock lock system. Working as part of a dedicated and experienced team, you will manage operational controls, monitor marine movements, and maintain clear communication with vessels and port stakeholders.
This role is ideal for individuals who thrive in dynamic operational environments and have a strong sense of responsibility for safety and maritime activity.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operate lock gates, sluices, and associated control systems
2. Monitor and regulate water levels to support safe vessel transit
3. Communicate with vessel masters, pilots, and harbour staff via VHF radio
4. Maintain accurate logs of vessel movements and operational activities
5. Carry out routine inspections and report faults or operational issues
6. Respond promptly to emergencies and support wider marine operations
7. Monitor CCTV systems and maintain security across the lock area
8. Assist with training and supporting new or developing team members
9. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the Marine Services team
About You
We are looking for someone who is confident, safety‑focused, and able to make sound decisions in a fast-paced operational environment.
Essential Criteria
10. Confidence working in a marine or similarly dynamic operational setting
11. Strong communication skills and ability to offer clear, responsible advice
12. Good IT skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel
13. Competency in VHF radio communication
14. Ability to work independently and show initiative
15. Willingness to undergo and pass an ABP medical assessment
Desirable Criteria
16. Experience within port, harbour, or marine operations
17. VHF Radio Operator Certificate
18. Familiarity with Marine Safety Management systems
