Overview
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is seeking a permanent Chief Security Officer. This is an SCS2 grade role and an outstanding opportunity to work in the largest Civil Service Department that touches the lives of citizens the length and breadth of the UK.
DWP serves over 22 million customers annually – keeping children out of poverty; helping people without jobs to find work so that they can support themselves and their families; ensuring the most vulnerable in society are protected. This role provides strategic leadership across DWP to ensure physical and cyber threats are understood and that explicit cyber and information security risks are identified and effectively mitigated, as well as fulfilling the duties of the Data Protection Officer.
You will be a natural relationship builder, comfortable working across a large and complex organisation. You’ll focus on understanding the strategic context, ensuring threats are understood, and translating security risks into appropriate mitigations, while promoting security awareness across the department.
The Chief Security Officer role at DWP is one of the biggest security roles in the UK, looking after £250Bn of AME payments, 25 million customers, almost 900 physical locations and approximately 100,000 staff and contractors. You will be a strategic leader, responsible for about 350 staff dispersed across the UK and a key influencer across the Government Security Profession.
It is desirable that applicants hold a recognised professional accreditation such as UK Cyber Security Council accreditation, CISSP, CISM, CISA, CCSP, or equivalent. Familiarity with international security frameworks and standards (e.g., NIST, CAF, ISO 27001) is advantageous.
A detailed candidate pack is available for more information on the vacancy. Prior Civil Service experience is not a prerequisite, however applicants must demonstrate the ability to operate at scale in a complex environment. DWP is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity.
This role can be based in London, Leeds, Blackpool, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle-upon-Tyne or Sheffield. Hybrid working policy: the role is expected to be in the office more than 60% of the time. Travel to other DWP and official locations, including London, may be required and could include overnight stays.
The closing date for applications is Monday 27th October 2024 at 17:00. To apply, please email DWP@allenlane.co.uk. The appointed candidate is required to attain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance post-appointment if not already held. In all cases the appointment remains conditional on this level of clearance.
DWP is recognised as a Disability Confident Leader and participates in the Great Place to Work for Veterans initiative. Apologies for candidates requesting to work in Newcastle: the role will be based at Benton Park View from September 2025, and at 1 Pilgrim Place in Newcastle city centre by the end of 2027.
