We currently have an exciting opportunity to join our Mental Health Support Team in the Grantham area as a qualified Education Mental Health Practitioner / Children’s Wellbeing Practitioner at Band 5 (Agenda for Change). This diverse role allows you to make a real difference in outcomes for children, young people, and families by offering early support and intervention.
The Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) support children and young people aged 5–18 within school and college settings who are presenting with mental health or emotional wellbeing problems that are of a low to moderate level of complexity and/or intensity.
You will support several allocated education settings, providing support to children, young people and their families. A key part of the role involves implementing Public Health England’s Whole School Approach, including delivering training, workshops and assemblies to the wider educational community and promoting awareness of mental health within the settings. You must be able to travel across the county and within the outer areas of Spalding.
You will receive regular managerial and clinical supervision to support you throughout this role. There is an opportunity to access internal training and identify further development needs via your appraisal.
Main duties of the job
* Hold a caseload of young people and provide interventions for mild‑to‑moderate mental health needs using Low‑Intensity CBT and other evidence‑based interventions.
* Implement the Whole School Approach in allocated settings by delivering regular consultation, advice and training to professionals.
* Receive regular managerial and clinical supervision and access internal training and development opportunities.
Job responsibilities
* Deliver Low‑intensity CBT and other evidence‑based interventions for children and young people in education settings.
* Help children and young people presenting with more severe problems to rapidly access specialist services.
* Support and facilitate staff in education settings to identify and manage issues related to mental health and wellbeing.
* Work within education environments to improve access to specialist mental health services.
* Apply acquired skills and knowledge to deliver a service‑based approach within education settings that builds on existing initiatives.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Education Mental Health Practitioner or Children’s Wellbeing Practitioner qualification, registered with the BABCP or BPS as a CWP or EMHP (or applying for this).
* Teaching qualification.
* Youth Mental Health First Aid trained.
Skills
* Ability to carry out 1:1 therapeutic mental health interventions with children.
* Ability to conduct 1:1 interventions with families.
* Ability to conduct group therapeutic interventions with children and families.
* Ability to conduct group parenting programmes.
* Ability to work within educational settings to increase mental health awareness among staff.
* Ability to conduct mental health assessments of children and young people.
* Ability to assess risk, record and communicate appropriately.
* Ability to take appropriate action to mitigate or manage risk.
* Ability to teach others about mental health issues.
Experience
* Experience of delivering low‑intensity CBT interventions to children and young people.
* Experience of working with children and families in a healthcare setting.
* Experience of delivering Whole School Approach work.
* Experience of liaising with a wide variety of agencies and stakeholders.
* Experience working with children and young people who have social, emotional and/or behavioural difficulties.
* Experience with anxiety disorders.
* Experience with affective (mood) disorders.
* Experience delivering other therapeutic interventions to children, young people or their families.
* Experience monitoring and recording outcome measures for children’s emotional wellbeing.
* Experience navigating complex social systems with conflicting priorities.
* Experience working with looked‑after children.
* Experience working with other vulnerable groups.
Knowledge
* Knowledge of educational environments.
* Knowledge of safeguarding issues.
* Knowledge of capacity and consent issues including Gillick competence.
* Knowledge of the functional operation of children and young people’s services.
